Reverse-body Thunderbird design with neck-through sustain and dual ProBuckers.
Ray Dietrich’s automotive-inspired reverse-body shape made the Thunderbird unmistakable in the 1960s, and the Epiphone Thunderbird 64 pairs that silhouette with the nine-ply mahogany/walnut neck-through architecture that defines the design. Mahogany body wings surround the continuous neck structure, while a Rounded C profile, rosewood fingerboard, 34" scale and 20 medium jumbo frets establish the playing platform. Matched ProBucker 760 Bass humbuckers feed independent volume controls and a master tone for flexible blending, while the Vintage Bass Tune-O-Matic bridge, Vintage Bass Claw tailpiece and clover-button tuners support precise setup and tuning. Offered in Ember Red and Silver Mist with a premium gig bag, the refreshed Thunderbird 64 carries the model’s vintage proportions, full-bodied voice and neck-through construction into a current Epiphone bass.
Nine-Ply Neck-Through Core Drives Thunderbird Sustain
The Thunderbird 64’s nine-ply mahogany and walnut neck runs through the body as the instrument’s structural center, with mahogany wings forming the reverse-body silhouette around it. Epiphone points to this neck-through construction for the rigidity, sustain and tonal depth associated with the model’s vintage predecessors. A three-ply pickguard with a hot-stamped Thunderbird logo adds another vintage-inspired visual cue, tying the continuous center structure to the body’s unmistakable automotive-influenced shape.
Matched ProBucker 760 Humbuckers Offer Independent Control
Matched ProBucker 760 Bass humbuckers drive the Thunderbird 64’s deep, full-bodied voice, with one pickup at the neck and the other at the bridge. Each receives its own volume control, making it possible to use either position independently or blend them in any proportion, while a master tone shapes the overall high-frequency response. CTS potentiometers support the three-control set, giving players continuous control over the relationship between the two pickups through a direct, familiar layout.
Rounded C Neck and Rosewood Fingerboard Keep It Familiar
A Rounded C neck profile keeps the fretting-hand contour familiar, while the 34" scale provides standard long-scale dimensions. The 12" rosewood fingerboard carries 20 medium jumbo frets and pearloid dot inlays for a straightforward playing surface. At the headstock, a Graph Tech nut pairs with open-frame clover-button tuners; Epiphone specifies a 19:1 tuning ratio for precise adjustment and added stability.
Vintage Bass Bridge and Claw Tailpiece Anchor the Design
The Epiphone Vintage Bass Tune-O-Matic bridge provides individual intonation adjustment for all four strings, while the Vintage Bass Claw tailpiece anchors them securely behind the bridge. Epiphone links this arrangement to the sustain and tonal depth of the neck-through design, and nickel plating keeps the main hardware visually consistent from bridge to tuners. Black plastics and Gold Top Hat knobs with silver inserts add contrasting appointments without pulling attention away from the reverse-body silhouette.
Reverse-Body Style, Neck-Through Sustain and Blendable Humbuckers
The Thunderbird 64 remains unmistakable because its visual design and construction are inseparable: the sweeping reverse body surrounds a nine-ply neck-through core, while matched ProBucker humbuckers and separate pickup volumes give the bass a simple, blendable electronics layout. The rosewood fingerboard refreshes the playing surface while the vintage-inspired bridge, tailpiece and tuner arrangement keeps the hardware formula intact. For bassists who want the Thunderbird’s commanding shape and sustain-rich architecture in a current Epiphone build, the Epiphone Thunderbird 64 Bass Guitar keeps the model’s defining character front and center.
