OVERVIEW

A perfect re-creation of the instrument played by the perfect bassist.

Jaco lived hard and played hard, and his bass paid for it. But despite consistent and brutal abuse (he was rumored to drag the thing around with no case), his trusty Jazz Bass still delivered that inimitable Jaco sound. Aside from a perfect new fingerboard, this is a faithful re-creation, right down to the peeling paint and screw holes from a previous pickup. Select alder body, special shaped maple neck, epoxy-coated fretless rosewood fingerboard, and replacement P Bass control knobs. Hardshell Fender case included.

I have been a bassist for 25 years, once professionally, now a hobbyist. I have had he latest and greatest, the oldies but goodies, the tried and trues, but when I received this as a gift from a great friend - I was blown away. This is all that is good in a bass, with nothing else there. It sings, it challenges, it is alive in your hands. Never have I seen such a beautiful thing as the neck on this bass. Don't be put off by the "relic" treatment, you will not find a shiny new bass that is as playable as this one. All of my other basses are gathering dust, and I am becoming obssessed with mastering this fine bass.

Great Sound For the Louded Wallet

By AlBone84

from Waterbury area, CT.

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

I was very surprised in the sound and playabilty of the Jaco bass. It definetaly kept a true sound to jaco's eminence. But when I saw the price sticker my jaw hit the floor. I could build one for cheaper.

Jaco or No Jaco, this bass is incredible

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

I was reading some of these reviews and I just couldn't help but wonder if some of these guys are reviewing some of Fenders other "Jaco" basses. There simply is no way you could play this bass and then complain about it. NO WAY! I'm a pro player, a former Fender endorsee, I own many Custom Shop Fenders and a couple vintage Fenders. Guess which bass is my MAIN gigging/recording bass. Thats right, its this one. Worth every cent, don't hesistate, just get it. The only thing I would change is I wish the paint wasn't quite so "relic" as I would like to wear it out myself. Other than that I wouldn't change 1 single thing. Jaco fan or no Jaco fan this is a great playing/sounding fretless.

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

This is an amazing bass if you're a collector. It does have great sound. If you read about Jaco, you know why it has the "defects" it has. Basically, it's not meant to be performed with. It is just a collectors piece, that's all.

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

Ever want to kill yourself? This bass almost did the trick for me. I have a Warwick that plays way better at a third the price, not to mention said Warwick has a WORKING VOLUME KNOB. Three of these things I played in two different shops, and none of them seemed to have volume control beyond on and off positions. I must admit though, the neck is pretty comfy.

Jaco's soul is in this bass

    By adman654

    from Ra'anana Israel

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

i've been listening to jaco since the day i was born, and been playing his songs since i first picked up a bass. but no matter what bass i played, it never sounded the way i wanted it to, the way it sounds on my dad's old records. when i played this bass it was like jaco was playing it for me, i didn't even feel like i was playing it. this is exactly what i needed, and since i got it, my overall playing and performance has shot a hole through the roof. compliments left and right. if you like sounding good, this is worth the money. i've used this bass playing funk, blues, trio jazz, fusion, and big band jazz. i wouldn't trade it for a thing in the world.the holes and scratches are not as cool after you've had the guitar for a while. i would like to get a new body and switch them, leave my own mark on this bass.

    THE BASS FROM GOD!!!!!

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

So I go into guitarcenter, and plug this sucker up, expecting a pretty fantastic instrument. My jaw dropped, (and not at the staggering price.) the best tone I've ever heard. I was astounded at the deep, throaty, growling sound that Jaco was famous for. Then, with the turning of a few knobs, I had the watery, synth sounding natural wah that comes with only the best fretless basses. (yet another tone that Jaco extensively used.) I also played a few harmonics on it, and got the brilliant, bright, clear response that many (who have listened to Jaco's Portrait of Tracy) have come to know. The tone isn't the only thing that is outstanding, though. The finish, (holes, worn spots, and dings included,) is absolutely incredible. I say incredible because of the closeness to the actual bass of doom in it's hayday. (and personally, I like worn finishes much more than brand new ones.) And the neck, man, I could go on and on and on about it. THE most comfortable, thin, and fast neck I've ever played on. (although I'd like frets on it, but then again, that would just be ruining what makes Jaco's bass Jaco's.) Overall, I was dumbstruck at the great quality, attention to detail, and playability of this beast. Even if the price tag is a bit too high.

    Killer Bass for a Pro

    By BCat

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

I didn't plan to buy this bass, just checked it out at Guitar Center in Manhattan. But as soon as i played a few lines, i knew i was 'doomed'. Such a sweet and yet potent sound, have not been able to leave it in it's case since. I am wary of 'Custon Shop' instruments these days, but this one hits the spot. If you can handle the price, then you will be thrilled. Mine is about 4 years old. I don't even know if it's still being sold by Fender.

    Best Fretless Bass Ever

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

Took delivery from MF 2 days ago and haven't stopped smiling since. I'm not a big fan of Fender's Relic work, and was reluctant to buy this sight unseen over the web. But MF's generous return policy convinced me to give it a try. Glad I did! This is absolutely the finest looking, sounding, and feeling fretless bass I've ever played. With the funkiest tone out of the box, and a well-worn and extremely comfortable neck, my playing is fast, precise, and sounds simply awesome (at least to me!). If you're in the market for a fretless, and are the fence b/c of the $ of this Jaco, do yourself a favor a take a shot -- it's that good! Also - the burst finish on mine just glows, even through all the relic work.

Even though it costs quite a bit, I'd say it's worth much more. My friend got this and let me play it (if I scratched it, who would notice it), and I fell in love with it. I'm saving up for it right now.

I bought this guitar 6 months ago. Ever since I couldn't put it down. It has amazing quality. If you were to buy this bass, get a 50 watt amplefier with it and it will sound like you are in a live concert. I have to say that this is the best bass ever.

    Left handed edition

    By Bebo-IceManSHM

    from Scotland

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass:

Just bought my new Jaco bass. It's a left handed edition but it's sheer quality precision sound. I'm not left handed and I'm playing it upside down. I could get the strings swapped around or swap it on the internet for a right handed one. But where's the originality in that? My advice to anyone who has the opportunity to get a hold of one though is that they should get it before it goes up in price. It's a collectors item and will skyrocket in a few years.
