Comments about Washburn AB45 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I'm giving this bass five stars because it is a great bass, despite not being the bass described/advertised. I ordered this in March and received it in July. The bass looks spectacular with a shine you can comb your hair with; the construction is solid; the acoustic sound is open and clear and the amplified sound is big and rich. HOWEVER the bass I received is not the bass described. The aesthetic differences are actually favorable to me - the hardware is black not gold, which I prefer. The main issue is the bridge. Pictured and described is a one-piece rosewood bridge with an under-saddle ribbon piezo pickup. But what I got are individual rail bridges with contact piezos meaning that THIS BASS IS NOT SUITABLE FOR NYLON-WRAPPED STRINGS and I assume probably not suitable for bronze strings either. I learned the hard way. Before plugging in, I replaced the stock steel strings with a set of nylon-wrapped, tuned it, and played it acoustically for a few days. Sounded great (although a bit on the quiet side for an acoustic) with a nice open sound and clear fundamentals. Then after a few days I plugged it in. the only sound coming from the amp was an ungodly hum. I checked my connections and rechecked the amp with another bass. No, not that. I was just about to return it as defective when I decided to do some research. Turns out that particular type of piezo needs a metal contact to complete the circuit and ground the signal. Washburn's website doesn't mention this nor did the pamphlet that came with the bass. Instead of returning the bass, I figured I would attempt to modify the nylon strings so that the steel core contacted the piezo. Now it works fine but the modified strings slightly alter the intonation and fundamental. Not unplayable but not the greatest. In the future i will restring with flatwound steels to somewhat replicate the acoustic sound I look for. I'm disappointed that Washburn didn't think this through in their design. Also, RE: marketing @ Musicians Friend - PLEASE UPDATE PHOTOS AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PRODUCTS YOU SELL so that this doesn't happen again. Thanks for reading.

Comments about Washburn AB45 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I purchased this about a 2 years ago and expected a tobacco sunburst acoustic electric dream bass. When I got it i was surprised to find a yellow-orange sunburst but it looked ok so i didnt let that phase me. It plays very nice, came set up great with its intonation and action. It has decent volume for its thin profile however if played finger style it will not hold up well against an acoustic guitar. Electric this thing stinks. If you want something to plug in this leaves much to be desired. It sounds extremely hot and overdriven, and lacks volume, The only good electric aspect about this is that it won't give you much problem with feed back for and acoustic electric.

Comments about Washburn AB45 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

Very smooth Bass! For the price it didn't have Gold Hardware or Acoustic strings and back plate was putty in color not Black! Called Washburn to check, was told hardware was mixed? Felt black looked better, then what about the back plate? Sounds to me like they are just trying to increase profits! Don't get me wrong it's a nice looking Bass but when you look at the list price you expect as listed!
