Comments about Ddrum Speak Easy Flyer Compact 4-Piece Shell Pack:

PART TWO-My other gripe is that the tom bracket on the bass drum should be placed closer to the front head on the bass drum. With an L-arm and suspension mount (which is nice), the tom was too close to me fir my liking, so I had to compensate for this by putting it further to my left (hi-hat) side than I normally like it.

Now for the good: This kit looks great ( I chose he Blue Pearl), and I like the fact that all drums are 8 lugs per head (rack tom is 6). I also like the wood bass drum hoops (although natural wood looks a bit out of place, especially on the Blue Pearl). Hoops are natural finish (unlacquered) on the insides, and gloss lacquered on the outsides, FYI. I also like the suspension mount and lifter that is included (though I don't use it). The batter heads are fine (single ply coated), but the clear resonant heads are paper thin, and are like snare side heads. You'll want to replace those. The front bass head is also paper thin (although it does have a internal muffling ring) and is smooth white, not coated. The floor tom on this kit is 14" x 14", not 12" x 14" as stated. Overall this is a nice kit that looks great and sounds great (with good tuning and better heads), but the quality control on the little things brings my score down a few notches,.

Comments about Ddrum Speak Easy Flyer Compact 4-Piece Shell Pack:

PART ONE- This is a nice looking poplar kit that sounds good, but also has a few problems as well. The thing that continues to plague ddrum on their lower end stuff is their quality control. A few general points about these drums: The shells are poplar or basswood, which is common in lower end kits. The bearing edges were okay (not great). There was also a large patch on the inside of the bass drum that looks like it was done with wall spackling or Plaster of Paris. It was sanded smooth, but was very noticeable on the inside of the shell. The shells were in round, though. As much as I love the look of the small, round turret lugs, they are not without their problems also. First, since the lugs are round and only have a single point of entry into the shell, there is nothing to "lock" them into place, so they do move a bit, even when tight. Speaking of which, the screws holding the lugs to the shell did not include lock washers, and the screws were "bottoming out" on me before I could get the lugs tight enough to the shell. I solved this by getting a lock washer for each lug (and thus making the screw a bit shorter in theory by doing so), but still I shouldn't have to go and buy 52 lock washers (one for each lug on the kit) with a brand new kit. Finally, the threaded part of the lug that the tension rod threads into is not an insert. It is part of the actual lug and is not replaceable, much like a tube lug is. So if you ever strip out the lug, good luck finding another like it to replace it.

The tension rods on this kit feel like they are made of plastic, and do not thread in to the lugs easily, thus making my stripped lug comment above even more of a concern. See "Part Two" of my review.

Comments about Ddrum Speak Easy Flyer Compact 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I got this kit in Natural Ash, which has an outer ply of ash (the rest of the plies are poplar). It looks absolutely gorgeous and is very professional looking. As a reviewer stated earlier, the quality control at ddrum is very poor. The main things like shells and bearing edges are good. All the "fixings" and little things are what's really lacking. I like to make sure the lug screws are tight before assembling the drum with new heads. The lug screws can either be used with a Phillips head screwdriver, or a socket wrench (they are hex head as well). I would say about 50% of the lug screws wouldn't fit in my socket wrench, because the hex head was mis-shapen. The lug screws felt so cheap that I would be almost certain they would strip out if I ever took them out to clean the drums and then put them back in. Regular hardware store screws are way better than these! Another area of poor quality is the lugs. As I was tensioning down my bass drum batter head, one of the lugs broke with an audible "snap", and this was at a moderate tension. The threaded "tube" that sticks out from the round lug (that accepts the tension rod) completely snapped off, and again, this was at a very medium tension. There is no way to fix it, I had to find a similar lug online for a replacement. It's not exact, so I put it at the bottom of the batter side so it's hidden.

I really want to like these drums. They do look awesome and sound excellent when tuned properly with good heads, I just can't get past the poor quality on the "little things". I cannot speak for what their quality is on their upper end kits, but on these mid-priced models, the quality detail is just downright bad. I will not buy another ddrum product because of this. I have owned plenty of entry level and mid-level kits, and none of them were even remotely this bad on the quality of the little details.

Comments about Ddrum Speak Easy Flyer Compact 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I recently purchased the Ddrum Speakeasy Flyer drum kit to answer a need I have for a small easy to transport drum set especially suited for small venues and low-volume acoustic settings. The set I purchased is in the natural wood (ash outer ply) finish and it is absolutely stunning to look at. (I'm partial to natural unwrapped wood finish anyways-but that's my preference). I found the drums to be well made, solid, and most importantly are responsive with a warm tone with the natural timbre of the shells audible. The only 'con' I have is the supplied bass drum single-ply batter head was insufficient in terms of getting a nice solid 'thump' without getting too much ring and overtone. I would suggest the supplied bass drum batter head be replaced with a higher-quality two-ply head like a clear Pinstripe or (in my case); an Evans 'Super Kick II'. That made all the difference. Now the bass drum sound is equal to or better than my Rogers 20" bass drum. Overall an excellent value for the money.

I don't think there's a better kit out there for the money and brand new. I noticed nothing about mine that would make me think they weren't worth every penny. Sound great, look great, feel great, and look well made to me
