OVERVIEW

A snare sensitive enough for whispering ghost notes and a wailing backbeat.

The 14" x 6" 1.2mm brass shell of the Mapex Wraith Snare provides the foundation for every bone shattering rim shot. The 9 vents in the shell bring a touch of dryness to the overall sound with increased response and clarity. Matched to the shell is the Black Panther 45 bearing edge making all your quiet strokes present even at a whisper. This drum will haunt you from beyond the gig.

The snare is also fitted with Sonic Saver hoops that reduce dramatically stick wear and enhance resonance. Additionally, a cylinder-drive strainer provides smooth adjustment by way of a self-lubricating bearing and "mirco-lock" technology.

This Mapex Black Panther snare drum features stainless steel snare wires for crisp, lively action, and premium Remo drum heads, including a coated Ambassador batter head.

Comments about Mapex Wraith Matt Halpern Artist Inspired Black Panther Snare Drum:

I really had no previous experience with Mapex before, and didn't even realize that the snare I was trying out on a kit at a drum shop, was this Wraith snare. It is as advertised- It's Explosive. And quite warm. It has a good amount of bottom-end which really supports the attack that we all like. I was impressed with it's overall sensitivity to head changes. Personally I preferred the Coated CS head the most, second the Coated Ambassador X (12ml thick). The regular Coated Ambassador loved to be cranked up high for jazz and it was surprisingly articulate and inspiring to play. My least favorite head was the one it came with, the Evans heavy hitter, though it really does add it's own dominating character to the drum. I specifically purchased this to fulfill the role in a blues band that needs a meaty sound on some tunes and penetrating rimshots on others. The Wraith does it all. My only negative is I think they overpriced it. They should've sold for a hundred less. I think alot of people might not want to take the chance for the current seeing price. I was very close to just getting a Black Beauty for a bit more. But-- this Wraith has a thicker more versatile sound for my liking. And I had borrowed a Black Beauty from a friend and played it every day in my studio for 8 months- just before this purchase.

Comments about Mapex Wraith Matt Halpern Artist Inspired Black Panther Snare Drum:

I had been looking for a throaty, dark, but still warm sound that I had previously only heard on various recordings and processed sound files. I play about 70 live gigs a year, teach drumset, and session work in a local studio. Currently I own 22 snare drums, all players, which I keep on hand to tailor a sound to a gig or a session. While I own 2 vintage supraphonics ( a 5" and a 6.5"), I only own one other brass shell drum, which is an early Stewart Copeland signature model. I had longed for a Black Beauty but never could bring myself to part with $700+ for a snare. So when Mapex came out with the Wraith, I was intrigued by the idea of a heavily vented brass snare. I knew it would help dry out what would potentially be a lot of over-ring and I wondered if it wouldn't dry it out too much. So when I spotted one in my local drum shop I was excited to play it. From the first strike I liked it. The deep, but not too deep tone, the dry but not too dry resonance, and just the overall tone brought the drum to life.
The drum really shines under big rim shots, but on the other hand it suffers during cross sticking, lacking the woody 'natch' sound I'm accustomed to.
I didn't buy it immediately but kept coming back and playing it several times over several weeks before finally purchasing. Once I brought it home I was equally happy with the sound and played it later that week in an arena where we performed and it was definitely in its element! I listened to the playback and could not have been happier. This is my current favorite snare drum. Highly recommended.

      Shell is badly misshapen

Comments about Mapex Wraith Matt Halpern Artist Inspired Black Panther Snare Drum:

I purchased this snare in a drum shop. It sounded ecent in the shop, however the place had high ceilings, so everything sounded a bit weird. I brought it to the studio, where I couldn't for the life of me get this thing to sound good. No matter how I tuned it or muffled it, the thing was riddled with rings and buzzes and sounded out of wack. I decided to retune the thing from scratch. I took both rims and heads off and started fresh. This is when I noticed that the under edge of the shell was badly misshapen. The reso head did not sit flush on the shell. No wonder it sounded weird. I have contacted Mapex and am awaiting response. I have never seen this before.
