These hats deserve some recognition

By Phillip Arsenault

Comments about Meinl Byzance Jazz Thin Hi-Hat Traditional Cymbals:

I noticed that there was no review for these hats, so I felt compelled to write one. I have the 14s and recently re-discovered them. After several months spent with some Istanbuls on the stand, I put these back up and was shocked at just how good they sounded and felt.

They are dark and fairly quiet, so I wouldn't reccommended for loud amplified music. I do often use them to play blues with electric guitar and bass and they are plenty loud for that, However, the true beauty lies in the dynamic range and soft feel that these have. The top hat is very thin which gives the soft and played-in feel, but the bottom hat is medium in thickness and un-lathed to give a nice dryness to the sound. The combination provides a great deal of sensitivity and response.

I would describe the sound as "cushy" - when closed they have a very nice stick click that is articulate and warm. Played slightly open,,the sizzle is almost wet. Strange analogy, but it makes me think of the sound when you reach your hand into a plastic cooler thats filled with half ice and half water to root around for the last beer. Very satisfying!

These hats needed a review because I think that they are likely to be overlooked. Check these out if you're in the market for some responsive and dynamic hats for low-volume situations.

Comments about Meinl Byzance Jazz Thin Hi-Hat Traditional Cymbals:

I researched these hi hats on a lot of YouTube videos. They have a great articulate sound and great stick definition and feel. I'm playing in a hard rock band and these sound magnificent and cut through two guitarists. They have a great washy sound if you like that kind of thing and a soft chick. They are light weight.

Comments about Meinl Byzance Jazz Thin Hi-Hat Traditional Cymbals:

I have the 13" pair and I'll echo the other review for these from 2011 in their regular configuration- very cushy and feel-good in their stick sound with plenty of nice breathiness to the open sound. The top makes a great large splash too!

However, I have been using them upside down almost exclusively. In this configuration, the unlathed cymbal gives you a wonderfully different timbre, sort of like the 13" Extra Dry hats, and it being heavier than the lathed cymbal, you could easily use this configuration for funk, lighter rock, and many more musical styles that need a less warm sound.

I also bought a used 13" extra heavy bottom hat that works amazingly with both of these cymbals as 'top hats'. Highly recommended.
