Comments about Pork Pie Pig Iron Snare Drum:

This is a really cool drum and has a lot of tone. It came to me with the heads pretty slack so I had to tighten them up a bit. With the top head at 80 on the DrumDial and the bottom around 78 it was huge but also had huge sustain. The ring would last for ~ 5 seconds -- seriously! Especially with the snares loose. If I tightened them up then I could get it to choke the bottom head a bit and reduce the sustain. With a zero-ring on top, this low tuning just made for a fat monster of a snare sound.
I tightened it up and eventually landed at about 85 on the top head and around 80 on the bottom. This made for a nice all around pop but it still didn't lose the impact. Again loosening the snares allowed for more ring and tightening the snares controlled it a bit. I ended up with 1 moongel just above the pig's eyepatch (on the stock head).
So overall I found the "Pig Iron" sound to be less like a chrome-plated steel shell drum and actually closer to an aluminum shell like the Ludwig Supras or Acrolite. My USA Brass Pork Pie snare was a bit more dry sounding. I find some steel shell snares to be a bit harsh, but this Pig Iron is smooth. It's also well built, like my other Pork Pies. I may do some experimenting with heads as these are the stock "Remo UT" (not USA). I'm thinking Evans Dry HD or maybe Remo CS coated on top.

Comments about Pork Pie Pig Iron Snare Drum:

Nice looking finish. Snare throw-off nothing special but works fine. Lugs are good, stays in tune no matter how hard I pound. Pork Pie stock heads are flimsy, will replace with heavier Remo ASAP. I was looking for a snare with lots of projection for pretty loud rock band; I have nice maple snare for other settings. This Pig Iron snare drum delivers—man is it loud! And it's a very nice sound, not overly metallic. I have it tuned pretty high right now and the pleasant surprise is how crisp and clean it sounds when played softly. Not only a tremendous value at this price point—just a really good snare drum, period.
