I admit that I'm not Charlie McCoy or Charlie Musselwhite. Bass is my primary instrument but I still consider my harmonica skills to be of professional quality, and that I'm also capable of assessing the quality of harmonicas. I have several Hot Metal harmonicas in various keys and have even played some of them at gigs. Nobody complained! In fact, I have been able to get great results with my Hot Metal harmonicas. Although I prefer the Special 20, the Hot Metal is close 2nd. On the subject of bending, harmonicas in the lower keys, such as the key of A, bend easier than those in the higher keys.Whether you are an amateur or a seasoned pro, the ot Metal hamonica is not bad...really!Hohner haronicas are all decent.

I played one on my first CD on only one song, knowing nothing about harmonicas. I just wanted a little harmonica. I had no complaints. In the 3 years that have now passed, I've bought one or two each of the Special 20's, Marine Band, Big River, Golden Melody, Blues Harp, Hwuang Silvertone and Bac Pak. I still use the Hot Metal as a practice harp for working out harmonica parts in songs, and have no complaints. I think that the Hot Metal is limited a little in that it's tone is consistently a mellower, too-warm tone, so I resort to others for a gutsy richer tone, like the fast-responding Blues Harp or Special 20. I thought the Hwuang Bac Pak harp had a deep gutsy tone until I bought a Big River in G. Bliss! The Marine Band just clearly leaks air too much from model to model and is frustrating, although it's tone is great, I can't rely on it for recording. My favourite superior harp is still not selected. The Golden Melody is too sugary and tame for me. I want to try the Bushman Frost and the XB-40.

Don't be a SNOB

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

As a harp player for 30 years, the hot metal is a great find for value ,quality, and intonation.Remember this is a under 10$ harp.It is not a Suzuki Promaster, nor a top line Seydel. It is a Hohner,in which, in my opinion has been well over rated for too many years.Having said such, this harp has good air tightness, easy blow and draw, and with it's thinner reeds, quite bendable out of the box.If I lost one today,I'd buy a new one tomorrow.

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

I bought this at a local music shop just to screw with in the Key of C. Thats what you should learn on, thats what i learned on with much success. So I got bored with the same sound and got ordered the one in the key of Bb, and oh my god, its so phenomenal! So springy, great for playing anything. So definately start with key of C, and then branch out, you won

Great

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

The harmonica I learned on. The bending doesn't sound the best it could, and overblows are almost impossible. The reaction time is extremely fast though. It's well worth the price. I own four of them. I use mine for just about all the jamming I do.

spend the money

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

I have a 15 year old Big River Harp I dusted off that still sounds better than this brand new Hot Metal. It squeaks on the draws and it has sharp corners that are very rough on the mouth. Harps are not that expensive so spend an extra $20 on a Special 20 (awaiting shipment).

Hold up as long or longer than apecial 20's!!

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

I have found that these Chinese-made Hohners play as well & last as long as the much higher priced Special 20. In fact, comparing them side by side, they are identical in size, weight & appearance. Best value I've come across for a hard-working harp!!

Great Inexpensive Harp

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

I was looking for harps to throw in my pocket, give away, etc., so that I didn't wear out, lose, or ruin my Lee Oskars. I bought a Hot Metal in A. Every note played smoothly, even while bending, which was also easy to do. It was well constructed and easy on the mouth, due to the plastic comb. Any cheap or expensive harp is going to have bad notes if someone plays too hard. All harps need to have a break in period and playing too hard either before or after takes the reeds beyond their stress level. Play gently and this harp should serve you well. I'll be buying more.

not too bad for the money

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

These are not professional harps but they DO sound good for the price. Bending takes a little more effort than on Special 20s or Lee Oskars but they have a solid sound and are somewhat airtight. Again, if you are serious about playing harp, spend the wee bit extra and get top of the line. If you want to blow for your own amusement, they are a good bargain.

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

I am a weekend drummer that has picked up some harp skills. I double on drums and harmonica at times. These harps are bright and responsive. They are great for working out parts. Although I use more pro grade harps for shows, I would not hesitate to use a Hot Metal for back-up.

Comments about Hohner 572/20 Hot Metal Harmonica:

I ordered 20 for a classroom. I did not have too many complaints. The regular, "some holes dont work" complaint. Many of the less expensive harmonicas will have that problem though. Just play trhough it.
