Fantastic guitar, but know what you're getting

By Wilson C.

Comments about Fender Thurston Moore Jazzmaster Electric Guitar:

If you are okay with the issues I mentioned earlier, this guitar is a fantastic purchase for anyone looking for a Jazzmaster. This guitar of course is meant to appeal to the Jazzmaster's massive popularity amongst the indie rock community, and that kind of music is really what this guitar is best suited for. It sounds amazing clean or distorted, and whether or not you're a Sonic Youth fan, if you want an extremely high-quality Jazzmaster this is a great option.
As a signature model, this guitar is pretty stripped down. The features are standard Jazzmaster fare, but no tone knob so make sure you like the tone (VERY bright) before you buy it . The S-D Antiquity soapbar pickups are absolutely fantastic. My only complaint is that the neck is designed in a way which leaves you with a lot of dead notes on the middle strings around the 12-16 frets. I took it to several shops and they told me that's just the way Jazzmasters are, so, again, be sure to PLAY this guitar before you buy it.
The build quality of this guitar is absolutely superb. The finish looks beautiful and the black aluminum pickguard looks great.

Also, though it's not advertized, I have called Fender corporate and they have told me this is in fact an AMERICAN-made Fender.
I cannot stress enough what a great value this guitar is. Though this guitar is slightly pricey, this is the price range where Fender really gives you the best value. The quality of this guitar rivals that of Gibsons and others that are twice as expensive. $1500 for an American Fender with fantastic build quality, top-notch hardware and pickups and a beautiful finish is a steal.

Comments about Fender Thurston Moore Jazzmaster Electric Guitar:

I own both SY signature models, and just want to point out a couple of things.
Contrary to the specs on this page, the TM model has jumbo frets, making it, for me, an easier guitar to play, as I'm not tall and have smallish hands. (Famous Jazzmaster players tend to be beanpoles.) The LR model has the thinner vintage frets as described.
While the guitar comes with standard .010 gauge strings installed, the "Special Jaguar/Jazzmaster String Set" inside the compartment are .011 gauge flatwounds. I don't understand why Fender doesn't install these to begin with. Search the net and you'll find the consensus to be that Jazzmasters work best with .011 gauge and higher. (Lower priced models like the Blacktop and Classic Player increase the radius of the neck and move the tailpiece closer to the bridge, likely making them better set up for lower gauge strings.)
According to what I've found out on the net, the volume pots are 1Meg (Fender, frustratingly, does not specify). When switching to my Gibson LP Special, with its 300K pots, the gain and volume get turned way down on my amp or else I get blasted out of the room.

This is a very beautiful sounding guitar. I love the antiquity II pickups, sound great clean or with distortion. The guitar was set up perfect out of the box. Highly recommended for anyone looking to buy a jazzmaster, Sonic Youth fan or not, you will not be dissapointed!

This guitar will change your life as soon as you lay your eyes on it. Once you actually pick the guitar up you relize how a guitar is supposed to feel. This guitar sounds amazing and will capture anybodys eye. If you have ever thought of purchasing a jazzmaster now is your chance. This is a great investment!
