I had my eye on the Tribute for a while. When Gibson rolled out the new line for 2018 I decided to pull the trigger.
First, the body is non-weight relieved for 2018. To me a Les Paul should be a solid chunk of wood. I don't know how much difference it really makes in tone. That's just how I feel. If you're paying tribute to the past, make it truly solid.
Second, the soft case is a huge upgrade from the gig bag that came with the previous year's models. Make no mistake, this is a soft CASE and not a gig bag. Inside, the neck is elevated so that the headstock does not rest on itself and relieves it from stress. A red plush material lines the interior while the exterior is made of genuine brown leather with a large, gold embroidery of the Gibson logo.
Third, this year, the frets are cryogenically treated in an effort to reduce wear. There are those who debate whether this really helps prevent fret wear over time, but I figure why not? Couldn't hurt. Right?
Anyway, I got the satin Gold Top and I couldn't be more pleased. It's a very attractive looking instrument. I like the faux binding on the body. It's a nice touch. Don't miss the neck binding at all. It's a well crafted instrument. The neck feels fantastic. No sharp or protruding fret edges. The hardware and electronics are solid. To my surprise, the set-up was perfect and it stays in tune much better than I expected. The pickups sound great and it's a joy to play.
Gibson has really hit it out of the park with these Les Paul Tribute models. I've heard they've been a huge seller for them over the last couple of years and I believe they will continue to be. If you've been pining for a genuine Gibson Les Paul, but couldn't handle the hefty price tag, the Les Paul Tribute could be the answer to your prayers.

I tried twice to add this guitar to my collection. My first attempt resulted in me receiving a guitar that had burn marks in the wood, from which I assume was either from the cutting and shaping of the body, or finishing. Regardless of cause, a long black streak was prevalent on the side. I exchanged it in a second attempt and received a model that had a horribly unfinished neck, which consisted of a misaligned fretboard, leading to a ridge on the bottom where the board and neck meet. This ridge was also hacked into the side of the nut, meaning the finisher noticed the problem after assembly and hacked at it after completion. Gibson's quality has been horrendous for a while and their reputation has suffered for it. I wanted to play devil's advocate and give them a chance. Twice I tried and twice I was resigned to admit that Gibson truly is a shadow of its former self. There very well may be perfect models of this guitar rolling out, but it will be a gamble if you attempt to procure one online, rather than in a brick and mortar. Good luck. I'm done with bad quality products from a company that rips people off using their name and name alone. Bye, Gibson.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute 2018 - Solid Body Electric Guitar:

I've wanted a Les Paul for a while to compliment the Fender AmStd Strat that I already own. However, the price was always a concern until this line was released. I finally came across one for a steal and I couldn't resist picking it up!

      The Pros:
      - The guitar looks great. I went with the honey burst finish and absolutely love it. It has a very classic, 70's look to it that makes me smile. The faded finish matches it nicely and helps that vintage vibe come out. In my opinion, the photos you see online do not do this finish justice.
      - The faded satin finish not only looks good but feels good. The neck is super quick and is much preferable to the gloss finish that comes on some models.
      - The tone is fantastic as well. Some people scoff at these pups as not being hot enough, but I'm getting harmonics on the low G of the E string. I mean, how much hotter do you need? Throw a Micro Amp in front of the amp if you need more oomph. The tone is classic Les Paul, and the electronics are very responsive.
      - The stock setup felt great out of the box. I currently tune the guitar a half step down, and the action seems just right for it (medium/low). The guitar holds intonation across the neck, and bends are super easy.
      - The sustain of this guitar is massive and is great for big chords and long lead bends.

      Cons:
      - The tuners could be a hair better. I've broken in the strings, but I do occasionally find myself having to retune after playing a few songs.

      Misc:
      - The fret ends are not sharp, but they also aren't as polished and rounded as they could be. My Strat is much better in these regards.
      - The guitar isn't heavy, but it is heavier than most Fenders I've played. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone looking to buy a Les Paul, but it does need to be noted.

To summarise, this is a fantastic guitar at a heck of a good price. I'm happy to see Gibson release such a high-quality product at a price that gives most people an opportunity to own one. Get one. You'll love it!

I bought this guitar as a practice / mess around guitar to take with me / I own 3 other les Paul's - 2 customs & a standard. This guitar has a great rock / metal tone. Fret ends were terrible. Finish was ok. All in All decent for the price but a far cry from its big brother.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute 2018 - Solid Body Electric Guitar:

If you want a Les Paul and don't want to spend a few thousand more, this is the guitar for you. The Les Paul Studios are also god but they cost more now, and I've never liked the way they looked. These Tributes are sharp, and the price is right. They have everything you need to get a good Les Paul tone (mahogany body, maple top, mahogany neck, rosewood fret board). They sound and play great right out of the box. For relatively little money you can swap the electronics and hardware and make a Les Paul Tribute sound no different than a Les Paul Standard. Sure, it would be nice to have the body and neck binding; and a burst top would be nice too. But are those cosmetics really worth a few grand more? I think not. The Tribute series are the best value guitars Gibson has produced in a long time. For less than the cost of a Stratocaster, you get a set neck guitar with noiseless pickups. I think it's a no brainer. Buy one!!!

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute 2018 - Solid Body Electric Guitar:

This is the most resonant electric guitar I have ever played. These pickups sound better to me than the Burstbuckers that come on the upper range Les Pauls. I have 4 other fantastic electric guitars as well as a couple of cheap ones and while I have only been playing a year, this guitar has an irresistable sound and bark to it that is unmistakably outstanding even to a novice player. It is difficult to talk myself into putting it down after a session as it is pure perfection in sound. It looks good also although I have several that are nicer in that department but who cares when it sounds so great. Could not be happier!

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute 2018 - Solid Body Electric Guitar:

If you want the tone and look of a les Paul, but don't have money to burn, you cannot go wrong with the studio series. I'd swap out the electronics and the hardware of even a Les Paul Standard. But I can't justify spending that kind of money for cosmetics (the binding on the neck and the body, and the pretty woodgrain finish). Problem is, I've never like the way the studio series looked. That is until they made the gold top les Paul tribute. I don't know why a gold top with a light wood grain back makes such a difference; maybe its the fake binding, but I love the look of this guitar. It is very well made, and sounds wonderful. There is only one thing you will notice, that is a sacrifice for the price. The frets are level (no buzzing) and flush (not protruding), but that's it. They aren't as "finished" as say an American Stratocaster. The tops are not crowned; the are flat. And the ends are not rounded, they are sharp. So there is a little work you need to do (or have done) to finish the fretwork and make the neck more comfortable to play. But that's a small price to pay for a guitar this nice at this price point. I love mine!

I won't bore anyone with my guitar playing credentials. If your teetering on buying a expensive Epiphone Les Paul vs this Gibson Les Paul I'll take this Gibson all day long. It's just a beast! Fit & finish are perfect. Quality is there. No jagged fret edges, no blemishes, action was a little high so I had it set-up and now it plays perfect! I think it came with 9-46 Gibson strings but I just went with 10-46 Ernie Ball Cobalts. I love it! I was considering the Epiphone 55 Custom for a little less and it came with a hardshell case but I'm glad I went with American Made. I think there's a big difference. The softshell case is of very nice quality and much better than any other softshell case I've had and don't feel the need to purchase a Hardshell.
