OVERVIEW

Martin's popular dreadnought with Hawaiian koa-pattern HPL for great clarity and projection.

The 6-string Martin X Series DXK2AE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar features Martin’s famous D-14 platform, dreadnought body design. The dreadnought was crafted to produce a powerful, rich sound that is perfect for the singer songwriter, as well as the professional touring and studio musician.

The top, back, and sides is constructed using Martin’s famous FSC Certified HPL Koa pattern. For added tone and volume, the top is articulately braced with Sitka spruce, in a 5/16 in. scalloped X-bracing pattern. The X Series DXK2AE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar has a powerful, rich tone, with all the sustain you have come to expect from a Martin guitar.

The mortise-and-tenon neck joint ensures solid construction of the guitar, with optimal resonant tone, while eliminating drop-off in the finer dynamics. The Martin guitar's laminate birch neck is a multi-layered wood creation, using bonding layers of
wood under extremely high pressure. The material is then carved and finished in a conventional manner. The end result is a very strong neck that provides definition and articulate sustain from note to note.

The modified low oval neck shape, 25.4 in. scale, 1-11/16 in. nut width, and 16 in. radius provide comfort and dexterity when performing intricate movements and progressions along the black Richlite fretboard.

This X Series DXK2AE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar comes compete with the Fishman Sonitone. The Fishman Sonitone features a soundhole-mounted preamp with rotary controls for Volume and Tone. The controls are mounted conveniently under the soundhole. All you have to do is plug in and play. You’ll have a great acoustic guitar sound, right out of the box.

Comments about Martin X Series DXK2AE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The Koa wood finish was attractive to me, along with the brand. I checked out several reviews on this model and all were positive. I viewed a documentary on the Martin Guitar Factory in Mexico that showed the evolution from making just guitar strings, to producing the value priced guitars that Martin now markets. It takes years of experience to produce a quality guitar. For me, I had a good idea of what this guitar would sound like. This guitar is made with HPL (high pressure laminate) wood vs solid wood. The liveliness of the sound is not as resonate as solid wood. The string crispness is not as pronounced. I compared the sound to a solid wood Martin Guitar I have. However, the mellowness of the acoustic sound is duplicated though the Fishman preamp/pickup, which I really like. I have other acoustic/electric guitars who's preamp/pickups don't recreate the acoustic sound like in the Martin Guitars. The Stratabond neck looks strange, but it is very solid and stable. The HPL construction and the Richlite ebony fretboard helps the tuning stability in a changing environment as oppose to solid wood. Martin uses their own premium strings (Lifespan) on this guitar. The only problem with this guitar was the string height. It seems the truss rod wrench that is usually included with other guitars, is absent with Martin. Maybe because it takes a special wrench to adjust the neck, which I carefully used to lower the action. I think, being made in Mexico (where it's hot and humid) and shipped to MF warehouse in Kansas (were it's gets hot and freezing) affected the neck? I like the iconic "dreadnought" Martin design and sound. Since a case is an option with this guitar, I purchased a MF case that fits quite well. Again, for me this guitar meets my expectations for playability, quality, direct recording and aesthetics.

Overall a great entry-level Martin. The Fishman electronics sound great and add to the rich natural tone of the guitar. The neck/fretboard are smooth and easy on the fingers.
