Dual EMGs in an HS configuration with an amazing finish and signature appointments.

"When Peavey and I decided to collaborate on this project, I knew that I wanted an instrument that could crush everything while maintaining a high level of quality and elegance," said Townsend, the renowned producer and mastermind of The Devin Townsend Project and Strapping Young Lad. "This quest has redefined how I view the guitar. To have a company that knows how to get things done behind me with a metal axe like this is a real sense of power."

The PXD Vicious Devin Townsend Signature Model has a 28" baritone scale, seven strings and a maple neck-through-body design that gives the instrument incredible sustain. A pair of EMG pickups--including a custom EMG 81 7-string humbucker in the bridge position and an EMG 7-string single coil at the neck--give Devin's Vicious guitar menacing rhythm and lead tones, as well as striking clean tones in the neck position. This gun-metal gray guitar is appointed with custom designed locking tuners and an ebony fretboard with jumbo frets.

Comments about Peavey Devin Townsend Signature PXD Vicious 7-String Baritone Electric Guitar:

This guitar is full of surprises. Yes, it was intended to be Devin Townsend's "metal" guitar, and by all appearances and functions it is a metal guitar. However, it is quite a bit more flexible than that, mainly because of the inclusion of the EMG SA-7 single coil neck pickup. I have found this pickup to be one of the clearest and brightest single coils I have ever heard, and it opens a lot more doors for a guitar that would appear to be a one-trick pony on the surface. It may have been designed with Devin for metal, but since I've had the guitar I have been playing clean and in the neck position a lot more than I ever have, with any guitar. I like a wide range of music, and I would not have a problem using this guitar for nearly anything I play. In my opinion, the single coil makes this guitar. Then again, I'm kind of odd.

The overall size of this guitar may take some people back. It is a large-bodied V with a 28" baritone neck, but it is surprisingly comfortable to play. It is very well-balanced, and the neck is not exceptionally wide.

Yes, it plays metal extremely well. Generally when I play metal I'm an old-school Bay Area thrash player. I just plug this thing straight into an old Peavey 5150 head and this guitar crushes! The EMG 81-7 bridge pickup is fierce and handles the heavy 7 string riffing with serious punch, but offers clarity and sharpness for arpeggios, harmonics, and lead work. Every note is clear and even, thanks to the active electronics. The lack of a tone control may throw some people, but I haven't missed it yet.

The guitar I received was special ordered through Musician's Friend, and it is flawless. I went all over and through this guitar and found not one single thing wrong with it. The paint is gorgeous! The electronics are clean and put together well. The guitar shipped to me was set-up and tuned to baritone A. My understanding was that they'd all be shipped in standard B tuning, but since I play in A I'm not complaining! Peavey did great, and the quality is reminiscent of the old Peavey USA Wolfgangs. Just a solidly constructed guitar.

My only complaint is that the battery for the actives is located in the electronics cavity without being anchored or secured. Not a huge problem since I've owned a few guitars and basses set up the same way, but I am thinking about adding a battery box to the cover so the battery won't be able to move around and interfere with the other wiring.

I will admit that this guitar is designed for a very particular audience. Not many folks are in the market for a baritone scale, 7 -string V. Those who are should try and get their hands on one of these. I highly recommend it, not just as a metal guitar, but as a solid baritone with a lot of versatility and possibilities!
