I've been playing for 44 years now and have owned dozens of guitars. This guitar is exactly what it claims to be, humbucking pickups with single coil sound. It does an excellent job of straddling the tonal range between a Les Paul and a Tele. Which means if you are a working musician, you just need this one axe to cover just about all musical styles except maybe thrash or metal. The tele sound is meatier and the Les Paul sound from this guitar is brighter and more articulate. What more can you ask, guys? There's a reason this guitar is perpetually in short supply, it's that good. An optional tremelo would be nice, Rickenbacker people??

I've had my 650 for about two years, and I really like it, BUT, when I first inspected it I had to do the following; 1. Sand and smooth the frets, and ALL the frets hung over the edge of the neck, and had to file them. Same with the nut! 2. Intonation was way off.(Allthough I've never seen an any electric otherwise) 3. I had to double check ALL the hardware! Now that it's all set up, (And blowing warrantee, I'm sure!), the thing plays like a dream! And nobody mentions that this guitar smells really nice!(No kidding!) If you want a cheap Ric, this is the one for you!

STOP BRIDGE

By Robert Leembruggen

from Mesa Arizona

I play everything from Moody Blues to 38 Special. A tailpiece works okay with the 12-strings, but for lead the 650 series bridge is perfect. The 650 shape is comfortable too with a fretboard wide enough for normal people. I changed my humbuckers to gold toasters for nailing 60's rock which has always caused a stir at gigs. Even today the 650 is uncommon. I will be purchasing another 650 and keeping the stock humbuckers in for harder rock. If you've never played a 650, make it a priorty to do so. The neck-thru-body comfort zone is tops.

I have owned this instrument for a year

By Reliable Sources

from Redding CA

I bought this 650D new just shy of a year ago now and have had multiple problems with the instrument. I love how the guitar plays, looks, feels and sounds but there isn't the quality that you get with a Fender or a Gibson. Within the first six months of owning the guitar the bridge pickup broke. Rickenbacker customer service was prompt and easy to work with, I just paid shipping one way and they covered the rest. The newest problem how ever is soft spots in the frets, I started developing fret buzz on a few notes and realized they are wearing out, I probably have less than 40 hours on the instrument and have had to raise the action to overcome the buzz. I've had a 27 yr old Gibson for 15 yrs that has hundreds of hours on it and just recently had the frets ground for the first time. I would think twice before buying another Rick even though they do sound and play great, I see this guitar as being high maintenance.

Rickenbroker

OK, my friend Jay who has been playing alot longer than moi, coined the title for my review. And these seem to be high maintenence as suggested by some on here. I have had about five of these in the last ten years, and have experienced problems expressed by others. First off, when the neck finally settles about six months to a year after purchase, the fret tang protrude from the sides of the neck, and require filing. The second concern is the reliability of the pickups, I had one that lost about 75 percent of its volumme in the neck pickup, RIC covered it under the warranty, since I did bother to send in the warranty card, I suggest you do the same, just the pickup is around a hundred. I think one was sent in for a new switch to if I recall. The tuners seem to slip as well when bending sometimes. Now the good stuff....lol...very high quality woods and craftmanship. Great sound with dead quiet mini humbuckers. Built like a tank, and the neck is somewhat bigger than your average bear...overall, buy one if you can find it!!!

I Really Want to Give it All 10s, but...

By RyanSelf

I really like this guitar, and I love the sound, but the quality control makes me wonder. I got this and fell in love with the sound and the feel of this guitar. I still think it's my favorite guitar for looks, feel, and great sound. The thing is that I have had the same problems with my guitar that other people seem to have had. When I got it, the pickup selector didn't work for the neck pickup. I opened up the control plate and fixed it myself by playing around with it a bit. A few months later, the neck pickup went out and now sounds like a thin single coil. I'm getting that replaced, but these little problems are making me wonder. I still love this guitar, but it all makes me wonder what's going to fail next on this thing.

Quality Control?

By Northwest Mike

from Bend, OR

See all my reviews

I just received my 650D last night, and I'm shipping it back. The guitar arrived with the pickguard/electronics cover completely loose and the two screws that should have been securing it floating around loose in the case. Furthermore, the pickup selector switch appears to be broken. I have no indication if the guitar came from Rickenbacker like this, or if the damage was done by this site(maybe the guitar is a returned/scratch-and-dent item-- but I paid full price!). But I am furious that after waiting years to buy a Rick, this is the quality that I receive! This site's customer service basically said "sorry" and that they could ship another one out. Great, so I get to wait three weeks for a guitar that should have never been sent in this condition in the first place!?

This guitar is freaking sweet!

By The guy who has a Ric!

from Canada

I got this guitar two years ago. I always wanted a Ric and when I went into my local music shoppe it really didn't matter what model it was as long as it said Rickenbacker on the nameplate. I also got a nice bonus I got it at a used price because it was a year old but the guy who'd owned it for the year was a guy who worked in the store and he kept it in the back room of the store until his wife made him sell it. Anyways the guitar. It's honestly amazing! It feels amazing like playing air. Best action ever!!!! I have this a Fender Telecaster and an Epiphone Casino and I can't choose a favourite but this is obviously the best quality. Beautiful. I'm really proud of this guitar and when discussing guitars with my friends who have custom shop whatevers this one always comes up and definatly raises interst. One Last thing...IT'S A RIC, BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome guitar

I actually bought the 650S (gold versus chrome of the 650D here). The tones, sustain, and expressiveness of the neck is unequaled by any USA made guitar I've own. This is a studio quality instrument. If I could only own one guitar forthe rest of my life it would be a 650 without a doubt.

This thing is a beast!

By DB

Just because The Beatles used these doesn't mean they're wimpy. This thing sounds HEAVY! I tried SG's and Les Paul's and this guitar blew them all away. It's got a nice wide neck if you're into finger-picking too. They pick-ups aren't active, but this guitar is super loud. I put a set of 12's on it since I tune low. It sounds amazing!

Ive been playing for 40 years, a lot of lead work...my main axe was a es 335 1970, until I picked this baby up. Wow it kicks big time, plays wonderfull, the neck is not thick ( I HAVE REALLY SMALL FINGERS ). I have the gold hardware on it, I get alot of comments on it. I play it as my main guitar...I would like a bigsby on it...still working on that. Worth every penney and more !!!

Just do it!

By Rick N. Backer

from St. Louis

I've always wanted a Ric 6-string (my son's 4003 bass is perfect) but never found one which felt right. I love the Ric sound, and almost went for the 330, especially because of the 24 frets, but when I read the reviews here, I decided to take a chance on the 650D. I'm glad I did! It arrived in perfect condition, perfectly set up, and on time. It exceeded my expectations, in that the neck isn't thick at all, as some of the other reviews warned. In fact, it reminds me of my old Hagstrom's neck. The width is perfect for me, as my hands have grown a bit since I got my Strat almost 40 years ago. The electronics are superb-this is truly a working guitar-no hum/static/etc. And, one can get the jangly trademark Ric sound by adjusting the tone a bit with both pickups on. (Not to mention the five or so other modifications one can do to the pickups themselves, described by John Hall at the Ric website.)The 24 frets are easily accessible all the way up, making some Pink Floyd numbers easier to play.It looks and feels great sitting or standing. It's light, and a bit smaller than I expected (NOT a complaint!). And, thankfully, the walnut was lighter than I've seen depicted-it's absolutely a work of art. In summary, you can believe the ratings about this guitar-it's a great value, and perfect for lead as well as rhythm.

It's a Rickenbacker man! You just can't go wrong! Great sound (not like the regular rick jangle, but still awesome) and the superior American craftsmanship you'd expect from one of the greatest guitar-builders of all time! The only downside is there's only one finish, but it's still about the lowest price you can get a neck-thru guitar for. ROCK ON!

Rickenbacker stands behind it's guitars. For the price of the 650D Dakota you can't beat it seeing that it is a MADE IN USA GUITAR.

My guitar came perfectly set up from the factory. Neck feels very fast. Easy guitar to play and easy access to highest register. It's a steal for the price with a nice hardshell case included. I'm very impressed with this guitar.

There isn't much to the guitar, neck through maple with walnut wings, and all american made. No finish and good hardware including schaller tuners. The tone is amazing and the feel of the neck is insane. Comes with a case and is all american made for a great price, probably the best value on this site.

GREAT INVESTMENT

By vital-revolution

from Buffalo N.Y.

I had the privilege of using this guitar at a music shop and all i can say is wow. the guitar had an excellent sound that i noticed right away. It had great sustain and what really impressed me was how well the harmonics came through. the neck through body is outstanding and had a fast feel especially in the area of the higher frets due to its shaved heel. No matter what style of music you play this guitar will easily outperform any guitar in its price range.

The best Ric

By Ben-L9-4L

from Victoria, TX.

This Ric Dakota is by far not only your best deal for a Ric, but it also plays better than any fender, or gibson, and the tone is incredible. Not only does it have 24 easy to play frets, it's just an amazing guitar, I would recommend a peavy amp to anyone, they are simply the best, although marshall is good too. . .well I saved up for the guitar got it, love it, and anyone else who is having trouble deciding if it is worth it, trust me it is. . .and the wait was not that long, like one week maybe. . .so yeah, it is the BEST!!!!
