Before you go and say these headphones suck, compare them with top-of-the-line sets on the same amp.No matter how good the headphones are, if you have a weak headphone amp, it will distort, especially with bigger, higher wattage headphones. There was NO distortion when I listened to these at a very high level on my computer. However, I would recommend for live DJs a more expensive set (in the $150 range). The level of these probably won't drown out 130dB of live audio. But Maybe. ???!They're slightly trebly, but when adjusted with EQ it sounds marvelous.I could hear every detail of the music!almost more than I wanted to.***Very high fidelity and multi-frequency capable***Down to 18Hz is correct. (I have Fruity Loops to prove this)I was able to hear clearly down to 26 Hz(which is as low as you need) From there, down, the level decreased but did not drop off until 18Hz.

These headphones are a little overpriced. I'd say they are no better than a set of $20 Koss's. Their freq. response is not flat. No lows. NONE. Too bright. Sensitivity was pretty good though. You probably don't need a high powered amp for these. Midrange clarity was good. Do not mix on these 'phones. I tried. I've discovered that it is impossible to mix with headphones. Period. These are pretty comfortable to wear but fall off easily. They are very light so they feel cheap but they have held together. One sided wiring is nice.

Maximum value-for-money!!

By The Waltz King

from Los Angeles, CA

If you can still find these excellent Austrian cans cheap, GRAB THEM! They are good old-fashioned around-the-ear cans that are very comfortable to wear for extended sessions, yet deliver bass and warmth that the 'buds' and over-ear cans can't dream of. These are a steal at this price!

AKG K-66

By Tyrfingr

from Gothenburg, Sweden

I bought these a couple of days ago on a friend's recommendation. And i just finished going through all sorts of music styles on them, and my conclusion is: These cans are good and bad depending on what you listen to, they have an excellent clear sound in the treble but a tendency to break up in the bass if you add too much of it (Some mixing might leave you content). If these handled the bass as well as they handle the treble and midrange i wouldn't trade them for my life.I would recommend these to people who listen mainly to moody music such as classical and soundtrack music. Whilst folks into Metal and heavier stuff might want to look elsewhere.

K88 - nice earmuffs!

I just don't get it - if these "stand out from the value crowd" I'd hate to hear the other ones! I hear a substantial loss of high end and boxy lows compared to other low to mid phones. Walkman phones sound better. That's what I get for trying to save a buck, I guess!

Just bought my 4th pair

I use these for recording all types of music including my son's metal band and also for radio production. They always deliver clear, consistent results and flat response. They're comfortable and reasonably priced. Unless you've got deep pockets, these are the way to go.

Excelent For The Money

By Anonymous

These headphones sound excelent for recording and mixing any clean sounds. I could see how they wouldn't work for metal. The highs sound INCREDIBLE and the lows are great too. Great Headphones

Good Value

By Amazing Fingers

from Evans, GA

Forget the bad reviews from others; I have had these for over 2 years with no problems. I use them for detailed editing of recordings, often for several hours a day. They are a great value compared to more expensive headphones I have used, and are extremely comfortable for long wearing time. The response is fairly flat, so you get out what you put in. They do not block out all the room noise, which could be good or bad depending on your application. The cord seems fairly thin, yet I have accidentally stepped and pulled it without damaging connections, but I wouldn't recommend doing it on a regular basis. I really haven't tried them at head-banging music levels, so I don't know if they distort at super high volumes -- but who would know at those levels anyway! For the price, they are a great value.

They are very comfortable but the sound quality sucks. My cheap ear buds sound way better. They distort at very low levels.

Cheaply made

If you are on a budget, go ahead and buy. Although if you want a good fit, good sound and good workmanship, these definately don't come close to it. I wasn't going to do anything pro with them, but after 1 day of using them I had enough and I exchanged them for a better pair. Get some Sennfeisers, you will definately appreciate the improvement in everything and won'tregret the extra bucks.

Close but no cigar

By Anonymous

These headphones are for the lack of a better word, junk. They sound ok, but i've had them for less than 2 weeks and they're already shorting out. If you're serious about monitoring spend the money on some better headphones.

Sounds great! Less filling.

Sound quality is ok, but they would be better if they had a replaceable input jack. I had problems with the right side fading in and out, (twisting the input jack solved problem at first), but now right speaker doesn't work at all. This problem started after about 15 to 20 times of use. Unhappy musician/home studio owner.

Decent & Cheap Headphones

By Jarick

from Minneapolis, MN

These headphones are semi-open, which mean that they do leak a bit of sound but tend to have better midrange. They completely enclose the ears, are very light, and very comfortable. I find them to have a good amount of bass, really great sounding midrange, but a rolled off high end. This makes for a headphone great for tracking (unless on a very quiet instrument where the sound could be picked up on a mic) and for editing, but critical listening will leave you wanting more clarity and detail. Also, the phones sound to me like they distort slightly on loud inputs, including peaks on louder music. So these make excellent tracking phones and casual listening for people who have ears sensitive high end, but should not be used for critical listening or extremely loud or soft source tracking. A great value.

Great Phones To Have Around

By Ashe Ruppe

from Fort Worth TX

See all my reviews

These are great headphones to keep around. I pretty much only use these while recording live in studio. Much louder than the K240's....and less than half the price! Loud enough to hear a live mix while playing without too much distortion at high volumes.....which is all I look for in a set of headphones like this. I wouldnt mix an album with these, or ANY headphones frankly, as a few people claim to use these for. Use them for what AKG designed them for and you'll be happy with them. Loud studio reference phones......dont try to use these in place of studio monitors for mixing an album. Worth having several pairs around for recording.

AKG K-66 review by Huckleberry Rosenberg

By huck rosenberg

from NYC

I have tested these headphones against multiple products from other brands. I found them very clear sounding with big bass, sparky treble and transparent sound. Only Sennheiser for about 300 bucks and maybe some Bayer Dynamics for around 200 sounded comparable to me. They gave me much better clarity than standard K 240.In terms of comfort, they are the best. They simply lay on your head like no other design. At this price it is a RRRRREAL bargain!!!Highly recommended.

Great Bargain

By BeeCee

from Salem, OR

I use these just for listening to music and have found them to be very enjoyable. The bass is bouncy with a light punch if you leave the tone controls flat, but can become muddy and bloated if you turn the bass contour up too high. These are slightly warm so I tone down the treble and that seems to bring out lots of detail and a subtly high end sparkle. They're priced right, sound good and they're reasonably well built. Decent product for those on a budget.
