OVERVIEW

The next-generation digital hard disk system.

Based on the popular VF-16, the VF160 comes standard with a built-in CDR drive. The recording engine features a total of 16 tracks, plus 8 virtual tracks. Simultaneous 16-track recording (using the 8 analog and 8 ADAT ins) to a large-capacity 40GB E-IDE Maxtor hard disk gives you hours of recording time, and FDMS-3 technology enables more efficient disk and CPU usage for more track minutes per drive without data compression, plus faster editing and DSP operations. Its superb digital mixer provides 60mm faders for all 16 channels, 3-band EQ with parametric mid and high, master EQ, channel and master compressors, eight mic inputs, ADAT optical I/O, 2 effect sends and 2 aux sends per channel, and 99 mix scene memory. It also comes with 2 independent multi-effects DSPs including a preset library with great effects. Other special new features include Scrub Zoom, Fader Pairing, Channel Solo, BPM delay, Event Map Locate, and Locate to Last Rec Point.

After receiving and setting up my Fostex VF-160 I jumped right into recording without reading the enclosed manuals and I was able to quickly format the hard drive and set up a few simple multi-track recordings. The VF-160 is a breeze to use, and has replaced a whole lot of gear in my home studio. Even with the limited number of virtual tracks, the system is flexible enough to meet the needs of the hobbyist. After giving the manuals a quick read, I was able to take the unit out to a gig and record a live performance. The results were good and required very little post-production.The builtin effects channels, and the ability to perform many functions on-the-fly, have made the VF-160 an important tool in my arsenal. The built-in hard drive can handle about 6 hours of recording, using all tracks, and burning to internal CD recorder is a snap. The one caveat of purchasing this item was discovered after its arrival. The VF-160 is advertised as a real-time 16-track recorder, which it is after purchasing additional equipment. Other multi-track recorders of this nature realistically make this information part of the sales data.If you require a small recording system for studio or live use, then give the VF-160 a try.

I have had twp machine and both broke with the same problem after only a few songs recorded. Both had hard drive malfunctions that caused me to lose all my song data and recording time.

I've been recording/mixing with this unit for 6 months. The tools, features, quality & versatility make this the best purchase I've ever made. Definately a value for the price. Very high quality unit. Steel frame.

Overall good tool. It's the first multitrack I've owned and used but it works perfectly well for me. It's not the best (obviously) but it works well and does what I need it to do.

Great Sound Isn't As Complex As It Looks

By PhloxParallaxVox

See all my reviews

This thing packs a lot of features into a relatively small space, so it looks dauntingly complex. However, to anyone willing to read the manual (a helpful document, though obviously written by someone whose first language wasn't English), it's not rocket science. And the time spent with the manual is well worth it. The sound quality is amazing. The internal effects are the best I've heard at this price level. The compression and EQ allow mastering and the ability to record a whole band at once makes this thing truly a studio, not just a recorder.

Seems to have a lot of features for the price

Finding that unless you are a recording engineer unit can be confusing to understand. Some of the terms are a mystery to me. Need a tutorial to study.

A lot of bang for your buck.

By Damie Dame

The VF-160 has so much to offer its user. This machine has what you need to produce quality tracks. The only down side is it could be a little more user friendly in the copying and pasting department. Overall this machine is excellent and can run with any digital recorder out there.

I love this machine!

By D,Jarvis

This is a very versatile tool for the independent producer, engineer, musician.I found the operating instructions easy to understand the manual overall was concise and to the point. It gave an old "analog trained" producer, musician clear advice to re-train into the virtual and digital 21st century.I highly reccomend it for others trying to break into this realm an expand their talent and knowledge to become better engineers and producers.

Great recorder for the price. Wish it were 24 bit.

The original VF-16 was the first digital recorder that I ever owned (I actually have two of them now). I learned on it and once I figured it all out, which wasn't hard, I relly liked it. I have tried the newer version of it (VF-160), and it is even better because of the added effects and compression. Now my studio has grown and I have moved on to larger 24 bit recorders, but I still think that it is a great deal for the money.

Great bang for the buck!

By Mitch 45

Lousy manual, but you'll get over it soon. With the money you save on this unit be sure to buy a good condenser mic. The internal CD makes this equipment a very handy tool for recording or cleaning up recordings or MIDI arrangements. Tons of space on the internal disk drive, but since you can save to CD-R either the data or your mix it just don't matter! Don't ask your wife just buy it now!

Decent Recorder, Horrible Manual

By swithchcraftjack

Just got a vf-160 with a vc-8 and was like a kid at christmas when it showed up. Imagine my dismay at finding out the manual was translated from Japanese by someone familiar with English as a 2nd language. This being my first Fostex purchase, I was unaware that the manuals were so unreadable and 'unhelpful'. Actually, in some areas it isn't even translated. Just straight ahead Japanese characters. America is probably Fostex's most lucrative market and most of us speak english. I've got $1300 worth of Fostex gear that, right now, won't be worth a dang to me unless I can get the contorted phraseology down. Jeez, what a bummer.

Great sound reproduction and easy to use.

By Dana Oliver

from Great Cacapon, WV

Works just like a tape deck as far as user friendliness. Super clear sound reproduction for the money. You'll be happy with this one. 8 live simulataneous tracks with 8 more to patch things up or add more instruments. And that is just the basics. There are many more things you can do with this piece. I haven't learned them all yet.

Keep it simple!

By Rod-18OCv

from Oklahaoma City, Okla

I think everything about the VF 160 from Fostex is absolutely for the money (GREAT) Fostex needs to have a manual that anyone can understand. The manual is the only downfall that I can find. Fostex needs to mail out a manual to everyone that has bought this product a manual that is very simple to understand.

Overall, a really great device...very high quality

By LeadGuitar123

from Glen Head, NY

Overall, I love this machine. The quality of the recordings is great...very high qaulity sound, rivaling that of any demo created in a studio. The manual is difficult to read and takes a few passes to understand. I ended up making my own manual that I can actually understand easily and quickly. Still trying to figure out some of the features, but for the price, it can't be beat.
