This the the first-ever condenser microphone I have owned and I have used it for a month now and been very impressed with its tonal response - very bright and clean with good low-end performance. I purchased this after researching and running into a few posts that recommended this particular microphone while reviewing others. This microphone is extremely more sensitive than all dynamics I have ever used, so took a little getting used to how to use it best. It is ideal for recording environments (where you can minimize background noise as this literally picks up everything).

A few tips to using this microphone:
- requires phantom power (all condensers do)
- a pop-filter is highly recommended for vocals (I also got the MG 6" double pop filter)
- any boom this is attached to needs a solid (locking) joint, as the microphone does have weight
- noise gating the signal can alleviate much background noise (within reason), so the quietest environment will give the best results
- this microphone literally picks up everything, so I had to learn to minimize movement while recording (will pick up foot tapping, movement, and even a headphone cord tapping a surface)

I am very pleased with this microphone for its price. It has been great to capture vocals and acoustic guitars very cleanly for further processing.

This mic is average. It produces a very clear sound (probably due to the Mogami wiring inside) I'll give it that, but it's a very bright mic, to put it nicely. It's rather tinny and without proper eq or a good preamp, you just won't get that great of a sound from it. If you're dead set on getting this mic, get it when it goes on a good sale, which happens pretty often. This is mic is not worth the retail price for sure (in fact, I'd go for a 2001 series which goes for around the same or less and sounds way better in my opinion).

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone:

read above, although it's not to be confused with microphones costing hundreds of dollars, I'm getting decent performance for what I paid, so it is a good buy overall.
Condenser mic, decent adaptor for stand, but shock mount recommended. High output, requires phantom power.
The mic arrived in very good condition and seems to be well made in the price range it occupies. Still getting used to using it properly in terms of placement, best application.
So far, it seems to ve a very good buy, since the used price was very fair. I'm trying to get a little fuller midrange sound out of it, but for what I paid it's a useful mic for recording acoustic guitar. It is very sensitive to low frequency noise, so getting the shock mount for it would be an advantage.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone:

This mic is utterly stellar. I come from a background, using Neumann, AKG, etc. Oddly enough, this mic compares in some respects. Unless you're using an SSL console with Apogee A/D converters, you won't notice the lesser brand. The thing that sells me is the little time I spend EQing, with this mic. Its response is very similar to the tone I like (shelf from 5k up, and a tiny boost around 3k). This is just more time I can spend playing with compression and processing. All in all, buy one of these. You won't be sorry. It's a workhorse, and I will continue to use it.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone:

Sounds better than my NT1-A. Warmer tone. I put it against a modified MXL 990 with and upgraded K47 capsule and the V63M hangs in there. I compared it to a AT2035 and the low and mids sound better but the high end wasn't as defined. I just push the upper level of the EQ and problems solved. You will have to spend atleast 300 to get a microphone that is noticably better. It's noticably better than the stock 990. Sounds good on voice and it picks up the guitar combo amp great when placed about a foot away. I wasted so much time and money trying different microphones. I should have just stayed with this. When I have 500-1000 I'll try some top end ones. But for now this is my go to microphone (or in a joking manner, until a label signs me up)

I have access to some fantastic mic's, yet I find myself using this over and over. If you are getting one mic for double duty on acoustic guitar and vocals, this is is. It's warm and the sound isn't brittle like a lot of other lower priced mics.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone:

This has decent electronics and capsule. I upgraded to a better capsule but the difference was not worth it. I've had a couple of these. My impression is that some are good and some are average. The average ones don't have as much treble. This mic puts the MXL990 to shame. This competes with mics in the 150 range. I got an MXL910 which wasn't bad either. I swapped the capsule out for a RK-7 on the 910 and it's very nice. As I mentioned I swapped the stock capsule out on the V63M for a RK-12 and the change was subtle. But I guess you pay hundreds for sublte changes. Good mic for vocals. Get a clean pre-amp. I use a mini mic or a mic200 with a new 12AXU7 or something like that tube. Nice looking mic too. A good modification might be taking out the inner screen mesh but I don't know if that's possible.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone:

This is one of two condensers I own, the other being an AT5050. Quality wise, I would put both of these next to each other any day of the week.

For other AT5050 users, this microphone generates a slightly warmer tone in comparison. I like it a lot and primarily use it for recording acoustic guitar, but it will handle vocals equally well.

This microphone is surprisingly light but does not feel flimsy at all. It is very solidly built despite its weight.

If you are looking for a high quality condenser on a tight budget, I highly recommend this one. As with many condensers though, you will need a pop filter if you intend to use it vocally. I personally use MF's dual-layer pop filter with very satisfying results.

Excellent microphone for beginners to intermediate users. Even experienced users and professionals will find wonderful applications for this mic. It's solid and picks up wonderfully. However, it doesn't have a 50hz kill switch so you will pickup your AC, heater, computer, passing truck, etc. A shockmount will help and you might not notice until you add a good compressor. You'll likely want add EQ to bring out the mid-range frequencies. Otherwise, it's a wonderful microphone and a bargain.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone:

Well, I received this mic as a Christmas present as an upgrade to the MXL 990. Mine came with the shock mount so I haven't had any problems with low-end rumble. In my own opinion, this mic has very good clarity and given my voice is naturally high in the treble range (noticed it when listening to recordings), this mic has a more warm sound to it compared to the MXL 990. My vocals cut through the music well with the V63M so I am pleased! No, it doesn't have a roll-off switch, but I don't think it was initially intended for use as an overhead mic. Nonetheless, I will purchase another one and use them as such when need be. Overall, good decision in getting this mic.

I was impressed at first because this mic sounds good on a recording, but when I compared it to a high quality Shure condenser mic (SM81) at the same level of volume, I noticed that this mic has a low-frequency hum that is significant enough to be noticed. The hum would not be an issue if the sound source is fairly loud, so keep that in mind. I record mostly acoustic instruments and vocals, so this mic is not for me.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone:

I bought this mic almost 5 years ago, and have used it pretty consistently, recording in a home studio. I've worked with more expensive mics in music and voice studios over the last 15 years. What you are recording determines 90% of the sound quality, any mic just helps you shape how it gets recorded. Overall, it is a great value. It's not anything close to a world-class mic, but if you know how to work with what it does, it can be a very useful tool for the price. The most important frequency range (the middle) is pretty well captured with this mic. I find I have to EQ the high end down, sometimes quite a bit, to get this mic to sound "natural," or to recreate what I hear with my ears, espcially for miking any cymbals. That isn't bad, sometimes having a bit more energy up high gives mic'd instruments a tiny bit more edge to cut through. Very low end can get muddy or indistinct musically, again I have to dial that back sometimes. A good preamp will reveal more of how the mic colors what it is capturing (good and bad), a cheaper pre can tame some of the issues at the frequency extremes, making it sound more balanced (although less revealing). There are lots of better mics available, but this is a sturdy one that does a good job for the price. Clean phantom power also helps it sound better across the usable frequency range, so a better preamp should be paired with this whenever possible.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone:

Have used these mics for several years. I work with a PhD concert pianist and her conductor/tenor husband. These mics pick up the nuances of the human voice, they are great for picking up transients from percussion instruments, they have a good low end for accurate reinforcement of piano, viola, cello, double bass and timpani, they do it all. They are very sensitive, and will pick up every little bump, so mount them on a stand, and make sure nothing touches the stand.

Get a good tube pre amp and a good interface and this should work for most people. The average person will not hear the difference.
