OVERVIEW

Professional recording quality, desktop size.

The PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp features 4 headphone outputs on the front panel, each with its own volume, and 150mW of amplification per channel-extremely loud output with a low -98dB noise floor. It also allows control over control room monitors with a separate volume knob that can be muted using the Monitor Mute button. 1/3 rackspace. Accepts balanced/unbalanced inputs and outputs (1/4" TRS). Input can either be set to stereo or mono (the mono selector button on the front channel simply copies both inputs to both sides). Powered by an external wall-mounted supply.

The HP4 represents a tremendous value as echoed by this email received by PreSonus:

"To my amazement, your HP4 sounded as good as both of my hi-fi stereo heaphone amps. Very very clean and loud. I can't believe you put 150 mw per channel, @52 ohms, to four headphone outputs and offer such a quality unit for very little over $100." (M. Burke via email)

I purchased this unit with a view to getting a bit more level than my Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 could provide from its phones output. What I was not prepared for was the massive improvement in clarity I could hear through my Sennheiser HD650 headphones. It was not a slight improvement - it was massive. I had contemplated the similarly priced Behringer and Samson headphone amps which seemed to have more features, but having tried out the Presonus now I would not swap it (although I didn't hear the other two units). Before getting this I had been a little under impressed with the Sennheiser HD650 headphones considering there rave reviews and high price - I had read reviews saying they really shine with a dedicated headphone amp, but I was in no way prepared for this night and day difference. So if you've got some decent headphones and are running them from a regular headphones output - don't doubt that these things make a huge difference - I did and now I wish I had got it years ago.

First one I got was defective. There was no increase in volume after the 12-o?clock position. Second one worked. The salesman told me that this amp would be loud enough for a drummers headphone mix during recording. Not true and not even close. It does provide decent sound but my stereo amp that we still use for recording drums, sounds better and is louder. I would not recommend this for those who need the headphone mix loud, but at low to moderate levels this is probably as good as other brands in this price range.

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

Each one of our 6 musicians/singers in our Kids Band at our church has one on their own mix. Having these allows our trainee/backup musicians to plug in and listen to rehearsals, click, talkback, etc. Very easy to use, and you can't beat the price.

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

I gave it a 2 because when it did work I really liked it.
After a year it started to go in and out and finally I just can't use it any more. One side is dead. If you buy this one make sure you get the extended waranty, you most likely are going to need it. I didn't and I don't know if it is even worth seeing if they would fix a 1 1/2 year old amp.
No value in undependable equipment.

Just a great product. This amp is super quiet. I was using a Behringer HA400 and it was way too noisey. Try it out and you won't be disappointed.

I had experience with the HP4 in a friends studio so when I expanded mine I installed the HP4. It is easy to use, set up is a snap, the manual is simple to understand, global + 4 independent volume controls and monitor mute are all great and easily accessable features. It also has great looks and a great price point for the home recording studio.

Revamping the studio into more of an Indie-level multimedia production facility for an Indie-level record label, I found myself needing additional headphone channels, and more control over my monitors. This solid as a rock, all-metal unit was exactly what I needed! Crystal clear sound, TONS of headroom, and that all important "monitor mute" button! I'd buy it again in a heartbeat!~M

Crystal clear but thin and tiring sound

    By Tasos98

    from Greece

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

I bought it as an an alternative choice of a double priced tube head amp to drive my Senheiser HD-650. The sound is very-very clear. I can hear whether the dust cover of my turntable is closed or open.BUT: The sound is very tiring. I admit I don 't like the "proffesonal sound" and this one "scratches" my ears. Furthermore, the sound stage is not placed above your head (as tit should be) but stuck right inside it (which is annoyng for may tastes). However is perfect for listening to old and warn-out vinyl records. Its analytic character adds some "air" to the sound and it makes them more listenable.I don't know if I could bye a better one at that price but I 'm looking forward to replace it with a pricier one.

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

Well I plugged it into my headphone jack on my pc speakers and started a playback. I had the units volume at about 10:00 and it nearly pierced my ears. I turned down the powered speaker volume and it was still too loud so I turned the unit down to a fraction above off and that worked fine. I don't yet have the right wire for plugging into a line out instead but I'm sure that will be loud enough also.

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

As an active member of Head-Fi.org I've heard a lot of very nice audiophile headphone amps. While this thing won't compete with the amps in the $500+ range, it will hold it's own very well against many of the DIY amps out there. It's dead quiet and will do a decent job of driving even the hardest to drive headphones. I'd highly recommend this if you're looking for an inexpensive but quality headphone amp.

Decent depending on what you want

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

Decent for the money.. Headphone outs sound pretty good, but the monitor outs degrade the signal noticably so you're better off going direct from monitor outs to your monitors.. that being the first reason.. the second being that the volume knob on the monitor channel is pretty ridiculous... first of all, there's no gain up until its 15% of the way turned, then a huge rush of gain at about 15%-20%. So your entire dynamic range lies in that very slight turn of the knob making it really annoyingly difficult to make small volume adjustments.anything above about a 30% turn will blow your monitors so the other 75% of the knob's turning radius is completely useles and potentially dangerous if accidentily set in that range.

4 crystal clear channels that can make your ears bleed without breaking sweat. I never turn it up past 9:00 and it is as loud as ever want it. I would buy this again at the full price even if they ditched 3 of the channels. Combine it with a pair of Stanton DJ Pro 2000s headphones for a bargain priced reference system that will blow just about anything you have ever listened to right out of the water.

    Static sensitive = Fried

    By Blind Howard

    from Alaska

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

2000 model HP4 with metal knobs - new ones look to be plastic.
Got up from monitoring chair - resultant static took HP4 out instantly (with very loud and potentially equipment damaging noises) when touching metal control knob. Electronics apparently not isolated to prevent same.
Too bad I did not register mine - necessary for any tech support.

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

I'm somewhat partial to PreSonus gear but this piece is not worth the risk. After just a handful of uses, the HP4 headphone amp failed - MISERABLY! The failure started with a sudden and severe drop in output level. Then came a low end, overdriven "hum." Seconds later, the smell of ozone. She's FRIED dude! Maybe I can re-use the knobs elsewhere.

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

I've had this product since Christmas of 2006. It has stayed on the whole time. Never any problems. The sound is crystal clear and there's plenty of power for headphones and monitors. The only thing missing is a power button! If you want to turn it off, you have to unplug it. So it's best just to keep it on. It stays cool and runs fine so that's not too much of a problem. The quality doesn't fit the price. I figured it would cost a lot more.

    A Quality Product

    By Deviate23-qfZCd

    from Charlotte, N.C.

Comments about PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp:

I, like many others on this site had researched amps around the Internet and at G.C. locally - the PreSonus HP4 caught my eye with its price and good looks, but as I've learned ? good looks and a low price usually spell trouble in musical equipment. But from reviews and experience with it at the store, i bought it. I love the HP4's non-existent footprint in my setup, I have it powering my KRK R8's and Pioneer 1000's from a M-Audio Delta 1010 and it allows enough power that I've never past the 6th tick mark on the volume knob. Using it on my Delta 1010 also lets me listen to iTunes and DVD's on my computer through it and truthfully it does stand up to the big boys in sound level with no distortion. I love the monitor mute button, a simple, useful perk that helps immensely in the mastering when you want to hear quality reproduction in headphones where you can hear every nuance or on the monitors where it will let you judge the sound your listeners will most likely hear. All in all, for the price the HP4 is worth every penny, and I always mention it when the talk comes to headphones.
