OVERVIEW

An 8-track Digital Portastudio with built-in CD burner, 2-band EQ per track, reverb, and more.

The DP-03 Digital Portastudio gives you the freedom to record two tracks at a time at CD quality to affordable SD/SDHC cards using XLR microphone preamps or a pair of built-in condenser microphones. During recording you can manipulate reverb and the 2-band EQ using dedicated knobs for simple operation. When your production is finished, easily transfer it to your computer via a USB 2.0 cord or burned onto a CD using an internal drive.

A pair of inputs can be routed to any tracks, providing condenser microphones with phantom power when required. The DP-03 inputs also include 1/4" line and instrument level switches for recording sources like drum machines, guitar, and bass. A chromatic tuner and metronome are built in for assembling polished performances. Once recorded, tracks can be bounced, autopunched, and edited.

Like the DP-02 before it, the DP-03 uses an array of dedicated controls for mixing, combined with a simple menu interface for editing and other features. New mastering effects like EQ and multiband compression have been added for radio-ready masters. With so much power in a compact package, the DP-03 makes recording affordable, portable, and fun.

I personally have owned a couple of Tascam 4 track audio cassette recorders in the past and a Tascam digital recorder with a 20gb hard drive in it and all were amazing recorders... But I can honestly say this thing blows them away in every facet, ease of use is confirmed with the instructions they ship with the item. I have used a digital recorder before so I was already use to the setup. Included are two mics that work in stereo and are very sensitive. I like this since sometimes I just want to set it down and record quickly. I have gotten ahead of myself with how easy it is and forgotten to select the track to record with and hit record but it goes to show how easy it is to setup, you can easily forget. There are somethings I wish they could update better, and maybe they have with the upper end ones, but I wish while having to set "in" and "out" on the mixdown and mastering you have to manually fast forward to the end of recordings and hope you don't accidentally cut off something at the end you didn't notice. Also certain SDHC cards don't work with this recorder... I used a Sandisk ultra and a PNY Elite and both worked fine but a standard PNY would not. Also annoying is that the recorder will not work unless you "format" the card, which it does before using it and sets aside a considerable amount of space for it's file system on the card. Also any recordings you do cannot be accessed until you mixdown them or master. and then they will be on the card in the wav folder. or you can opt to use a usb cable... Which was way slower than just removing the sdcard and plugging it into the computer. Tone adjustment is great on this as you can set which freqs you are adjusting on the hi and low. I used this in tandem with a Canon EOS 70D through the mic port and made some pretty good recordings.
All in all a great feature set on an amazing recorder and for a great price. Even if you paid full price I would not of hesitated if I knew what I know now. Just remember to get a good name brand high quality Memory card and you should be good on this recorder and be patient since the mastering can't be fast forwarded, you have to wait for it to essentially playback for as long as the initial recording was for some reason. I always wondered if there was a way to speed it up but so far I haven't found a way to yet. BTW It feels solid too, doesn't feel flimsy at all very good construction. And the layout is familiar to any that have used TASCAM Multitrack recorders before. I don't regret getting this one second. I would do it again in a heartbeat!!!

I tested this for a friend and was not impressed.
Tascam took a proven winner, the DP-02, ditched the internal 40GB hard drive, and replaced it with a slot for an SDHC memory card. The purchaser loses 38GB in storage space, because the unit only comes from the factory with a 2GB card. While the possibility of simply swapping memory cards when one becomes full is attractive, since it is easier than swapping a hard drive, the memory cards are not cheap. The least expensive 32GB I could find on Tascam's approved media list has a street price of $65. Coupled with the fact that this has a street price which is priced higher than the DP-02, that means an investment of at least $130 more than what the DP-02 costs in order to approximate its storage capacity.
Cost aside, the second reason for switching to memory cards as opposed to an optical drive is that memory cards are about as flimsy as the old 3.5" floppy disks--they won't hold up over time. Like old floppy disks, they are also prone to damage from exposure to magnetic fields, unlike data stored on an optical drive.
All in all, idea behind it [more portability] is great, but the execution is not well thought out for those of us who want a small all-in-one unit for a small project studio, don't have a fortune to spend, and don't want the learning curve of the 24-track flagship of the Tascam line.
The Zoom R8 costs $200 less, and will do anything this can do with the exception of burning CDs. But that's what I have a computer for.
No features which are not found in other units costing less. Compare to the Zoom R8, which is less--this means the purchaser is paying for a CD burner, which is the only feather this has that the comparable Zoom Unit lacks.
The build is flimsy compared to comparable units from Boss and Zoom.

Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio:

The Jog wheels flexibility makes this machine so easy to use.
I bought the Tascam DP-03 because I was getting so frustrated with the problems of using music software and, I longed for the days of when I could edit like I did with a razor knife on tape.
What I found was more than that. The amazing thing about it was the learning experience of using compression levels to make that recording shine. I have used compression in the past but, the machines are complicated and time consuming. The Tascam, laid out the way to use compression in a better way with easier language. This machine does everything but sing. From the Jog wheel to the fine recording textures you can achieve; you won't feel you wasted your money. What makes it different than the Zoom machine? Flexibility!! How many hours was I recording? 14. I simply love this machine.

Tascam DP-03

Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio:

I love this recorder - it is easy to use and intuitive and produces studio quality recordings. I'm a professional saxophonist and have used several studios to record my music. This recorder does every bit as good as these studios. The only drawback is that the reverb allows up to 3 seconds - I wish it would allow more.

Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio:

I have been playing for a very long time and decided to make a home studio. The DP 03 just came out when I bought it and it has come down in price since. You will need to buy a larger SD card than the one that comes with it but it is fine to get you started. I bought a sixteen gig card for very little money. The quality of the recording is excellent and burning the music right on to a CD makes the unit more self sufficient. It was not intuitive to know how to use the unit although I have never tried one. The manual was my best friend early on.In the end the sound quality of the recording/CD is most important and this unit will satisfy that. I am very happy with the quality of the DP-03.

If I went to the school of technology I'd be riding the short bus! But, even I was able to start using this thing right out of the box and am nothing but impressed with the results. This machine is capable of doing so much and I really don't think you can beat the price. If your on the fence about buying the Dp-03 I say buy it!

Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio:

NO CONS FROM ME HERE, well three EQ knobs on each channel would be awesome, but I happily sacrifice those for a much lower cost unit. That being said, I have no ties to Musician's Friend or Tascam but I need to rave about this product. But first things first: Just be aware when you order over the phone to tell them that their description of the item IMPLIES THAT NO POWER ADAPTER PROVIDED" however it INDEED DOES COME WITH THE POWER ADAPTER. You will NOT need to order one from them. So the rep has a free pass on this one, PLUS another important piece of info, I did "un-necessarily" pay for the seperate said power adapter and it's a 5V. So I'm like, "I never heard of any 5v powered gadget in my life". But then I open the DP-03 box and there's 2 separate "manual update info" pages and one reads "manual states this product runs on 5V power, BUT IN FACT IT RUNS ON THE VERY COMMON 12V system" and there's a nice long adapter tucked away in the corner of the box. So the phone rep gets another erroneous free pass for sending me a useless adapter, as he merely ordered what evidently their computer description read. So I had to call Musician's Friend and inform them of these 2 erroneous bits of info they have on file and they immediately emailed a "FREE" RETURN AUTHORIZATION UPS sticker to print to ship it back for a full refund. Actually, I need to check if they credited my card yet. Enough time must have passed by now, I hope. OK then, back now to the product. I had the the predecessor DP-02 with effects in 2005 and it was a pleasurable God-send for this here "40 year span recording veteran musician". And here is the comparable but much streamlined modern beauty follow up in this comparatively tiny DP-03 that looks like a a futuristic gadget from a latest Tom Cruise/Spielberg Sci-Fi thriller. Like a little Ferarri in your hand. I lie at night sometimes in bed with it with my Shure Mic and Epiphone SG (with brand new EMG active pickups on it) and work on song parts so I don't forget them before I sleep. My EMG packed SG sounds like Heaven just straight into this thing. What a pleasure in life to get such a bargain priced, but so user friendly, and attractive, superior product to motivate you to do some recording. Has large mics built in on left and right to sing in stereo, no cords needed, just to quickly sing a part on the fly so as to not forget it.
I highly recommend this thing. I had huge Tascam reel to reels in the 70's and 80's, 2 track, 4 track and then later 8 track and I'm so glad to have lived to see such a power packed machine to do the same tasks that sits right in the palm of your hand for comparatively dirt cheap. Life is good once in a while and my money was very well spent on this unit. OK that's my report. Thank you, Musician's Friend, for this forum to share this info with your readers.

Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio:

I will never buy another Tascam product. This was the first Tascam recording device I purchased and shall be the last. There's a "SD-Write busy" glitch that occurs on here. For example, you will be in the midst of mixing down a song and then all the sudden, it starts to skip all over the place. Then..it freezes, and then "SD Write busy" displays on the screen and then you are forced to turn the device off and back on. If you're lucky, it may not do it again, but more than likely, it will persist. I had a song that I tried numerous times to mix,and it constantly kept glitching up at the exact same time everytime. You can just imagine how frustrating this really is. Do not buy this. Spare yourself the frustration. Don't buy any Tascam recording device for that matter because I've read that they're all very glitchy.
Go with a better brand because this glitch is extremely irritating. Had it not been for this glitch, this would be a pretty sweet device, but no.

I'm so glad I bought the DP-03 sd/cd for the price I paid. I thought it might cost a lot more. I can't believe it has so many features that it has when I record the song, I play it back, I hit the EQ and it continues playing and the sound is changing as I control the gain of high or low. Other portable recorders do not have such a feature. I've yet to find more good stuff on it cause for now I haven't had it too long. I'm looking forward to it.

Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio:

I have been using a DP-04, so this was easy to get used to as it's basically the same. They seem daunting at first, but follow the examples in the book and you'll soon be a pro. Does a great job of amateur recording and then the built in CD burner gives a finished product quick and easy.

This is a good recording unit for beginner or experienced musicians. Tascam once again made a very easy to use machine and kept to the similar concept seen throughout all of the Portastudio series. I have actually transferred some of my old analog four track cassette recordings into the DP- 03 and added additional tracks then mixed and mastered them. All you need is an impedence matcher (Rolls MB15B). Great, versatile unit.

I bought to replace my zoom zhn. It is a little cumbersome at first to get started. My only complaint is the the power supply supplied is not grounded.
Because of this there is a faint buzz sound when recording guitar tracks. There is a ground on the bottom of the unit. Why not simply include a ground in the power supply. Anyways I rigged up a ground wire to kill the unwanted feedback. Overall it does what says. It puts out great sound and is a great buy.
Jeez ... Really ppl include a three prong power supply.

This worked great when it did work, but after a year and a half, for no apparent reason, it stopped working and is completely useless. Every time I try to record, I get a message "SD Card Busy" and I'm forced to shut down everything, losing what I had recorded (but usually not even able to finish a song). It will cost at least 80 plus shipping to get it fixed, which isn't worth it to me. I am hoping I have better luck with Zoom. This was great and easy to use, but it did not last.

This thing really sounds awesome and is easy to use. I've been using it to record music I'm doing with my fellow musicians, and emailed some recordings over to one of them to which he commented, "wow, that DP-03 really makes us sound good". The only downside is that you can only recorded two channels simultaneously, as there are only two input jacks available on the back panel (either two 1/4" jacks or two XLR jacks). Note however you can still overdub six tracks, and even more if you bounce the tracks downs. But of everything, I think I'm most impressed with the dual stereo built-in mics. They sound as good as many external condensing mics.
