Up until a few weeks ago, I had never strummed a guitar. Then I saw Buddy Guy one night in Salina.I took a mission to learn, and while surfing this site spotted this gadget, read the reviews and decided it was worth a shot.Man, I am soooo green..and that aint no ordinary fiddle Lionel Young plays..The first day with this, my 56yo little finger could not work the plunger set to its softest setting -without screaming in pain. I'm working this with the tips of the fingers to strengthen and train to not accidentally mute adjacent strings.I had problems with the end of my pinky..seemed like the cartilage didnt want to settle in with being pressed on the very tip. -it really hurt.In short; this works.I gave it a 4.5 overall because the plunger pads are contoured (not flat like a fretboard) and could maybe benefit from having raised lines to simulate strings because I need both finger strength and toughened skin, but on the bottom of the exerciser, under the removable rubber cap, are a set of hard plastic molded-in lines that simulate strings, but not at the correct spacings.Anyway, day one I could only get my pinky to press 4 times before it was screaming time-out. but after just 3 days I can now squish on it all day and will soon crank up the plunger tension. The immediate result is I can attempt to play more chords before my hand gives out. This is an effective device!

I bought this brand because it advertised that "allows the user to set the tension from x-light to hard without purchasing a separate item". Sounds great but there is no "x-light" tension on this. The lightest setting is about the same tension as my Grip Master Medium. The Grip Master is better constructed. You should buy the Grip Masters in different tension versions. It would also be faster to switch units than to have to screw 4 different adjustments on the Varigrip. Though if you need a device that can adjust for a sprained, strained or weak specific finger then the Varigrip is your choice. You just won't find an X-light or light tension setting on it.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

I am a keyboard player and choral music teacher (I play for my kids), and 15 years ago I got my left hand caught in a choral riser, almost cutting off my left ring finger and damaging two other fingers. After surgery and a long healing time, I had less than 40% usage of the finger, as well as nerve damage in my left hand. The docs said they had done their best and that the damage was permanent, but God had other plans. I used this unit (earlier version) throughout the day for almost a year, both with the individual finger exercises, and flipping it over putting the solid bar into my fingers to spread out the tension. I'm not at 100% but I am probably at 90%. I teach French horn as well, and this helped me strengthen my left hand -- specifically the ring finger for third valve -- and I have recommended and purchased this for several of my friends over the years, which is what this purchase was. One friend was in an ATV crash and did a lot of damage, and the other was injured last year on the job, almost severing several fingers on his left hand. Both ride motorcycles, and Varigrip is helping them strengthen their left hand and fingers. One friend is already able to ride again, and he attributes this to he Varigrip. Pretty cool, huh!

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

This unit is a must have for all musicians that use their fingers to play their instruments. And yes I mean brass and woodwinds as well as stringed instruments. It strengthens as well as helps to increase dexterity. To access the part that simulates strings to keep your callouses calloussed you have to remove the rubber cover on the bottom side (not the 4 individual parts that fit the fingers) and you can create your own way to use it like this.

Very useful tool to develop grip strength! Seems quite sturdy and should last for a long time. The variable tension in the device is neat as it means you can customize each finger's "workout", and it will scale up with you as you improve. I'm still unsure about the usefulness of the callous building side, but still using it regularly.

Since using the Varigrip I have noticed more strength and dexterity in my fretting hand and also improved my fingerstyle playing hand. My trigger finger problem is much less now. Hand was damaged from a dog bite infection. Highly recommended! Best thing I have tried in over 30 years of guitar playing.

I have used this product for two months, and it performs as advertised; very useful for building strength and control; makes playing significantly easier. I find that I get the best results by pressing with the fingertips only, with the fingers curved, which duplicates good guitar playing form. I mostly use individual fingers, one at a time, while keeping the other three gently in contact with the buttons. Try this--it's great!

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:

I had been searching for a product of this type. The Varigrip Hand Exerciser is truly a great way to improve the agility, dexterity and speed of you your fingers, while at the same time strengthening them, as well as the hand, wrist, and forearm. All this without having to purchase four or five other types of products to get the same desired results.
I just recently began using the Varigrip H/E and have found it to be very useful in several different ways by developing the fingers, hand, forearm, and wrist muscles. I like the flexilbility of adjusting the tension of the "pistons" for each individual finger. Also, the simulated "guitar strings" are an excellent way to build and maintain finger calluses.
I consider the quality of the Varigrip H/E second to none. It is light weight, easy to use and ergonomically a comfortable fit in the hand. Its material composition appears to be durable and solid.
The Varigrip H/E is very well worth every penny it costs. Buy it! Your hand, forearm, and wrist will 'thank you' for it!

I have played keyboards for 45 years but have always wanted to learn to play guitar. Although my hands and fingers are fast and agile, my left hand was always keeping me from succeeding because it is weaker. This thing is fun to use and you can feel it working the first day. My hands are on the small side of average and it still fits me well.
Simple, lightweight, adjustable, comfortable, easy to carry anywhere. Use it riding around town or just watching TV
              Works well. Seems well made

This is a cool little gadget to keep in the car, office or carry on trips. It does help develop finger strength, dexterity, wrist strength, indurance and individual finger control. I have not noticed any improvement in speed as the packaging suggests. The item itself is a cheap little piece of chinese plastic. Mine is holding up well but I can see where a bad unit might slip through once in a while resulting in the defects mentioned by other reviewers. By and large I would say it is a very useful tool for anyone who plays a stringer instrument.

I use this product to warm up my fingers if I don't have a chance to warm up with my guitar just playing single notes. I take this every where I go before I start to play. During a long trip, I use this product to memorize the scales, technics, strength, and to have reflexiabity. Also I can ajust it to to a certain length to able to press hard or have it easily! It's great!

Made of plastic but tough plastic not the cheap brittle stuff-I have no concerns about durability. Molded finger pieces and base are great. Not as challenging for index and second finger but works the ring and pinky fingers hard, just what I was looking for. Can be adjusted to increase the challenge.

Found this to be really effective at increasing finger strength and speed, I use it on both hands to also increase strength in my finger picking. I have it with me all the time, at work or at meetings, I was using it one day and another guy had one, I showed him how to change the settings because he does not read instructions.
