Don't Forget

The essential preamp/direct box for every toolbox.

Based on the respected OBP-3 preamp, Aguilar's Tone Hammer features fully sweepable midrange frequencies in addition to bass and treble controls. With the Tone Hammer's pristine DI you are set for the studio or the stage.

To give this tone shaping preamp the ultimate flexibility, Aguilar added their proprietary Adaptive Gain Shaping circuitry (AGS) to the preamp. AGS allows the player to kick in an additional gain structure and EQ with the "stomp" of a button. You can now go from modern slap sounds to vintage or overdriven.

18-volt operation gives the Aguilar Tone Hammer plenty of headroom to reproduce the most dynamic playing style. Separate Gain and Master controls allow you to dial in just the right gain structure for any instrument.

    Great for a flexible sound

Comments about Aguilar Tone Hammer Bass Preamp/Direct Box:

I bought a Tone Hammer to replace a DigiTech BP200 Bass Multi-Effects Processor which I only used for EQ, preamp, and compression. Even at the expense of losing my compressor (for now), the Tone Hammer is well worth the upgrade. It's a fantastic analog option for those who want pre-amp, EQ, and DI in one, and it sounds great. The tone controls are simple and powerful. Having sweepable mids are fantastic, as this is where the true versatility and sound shaping comes from. Using standard EQ by rolling off the bass and highs while boosting the mids, sweeping the frequency allows that boost to increase presence, attack, or body. The mid sweep is now the biggest thing shaping my sound, and I love it! The included DI is also fantastic. It's great to be able to run straight to the board without extra equipment. The DI output is clean, and the box even runs off phantom power through the DI output. That means I don't need to run through 9V batteries, or use a separate DC power supply, which helps both peace of mind and stage clutter. The AGS gain stage provides good distortion, though not always to my taste. The fact that engaging the AGS also results in a volume boost means I don't change the AGS during a song, as well. I've found that rolling significantly off the highs and boosting low-mids with just a little bit of gain provides good results. I would consider these settings a 'grumpy' distortion tone, a little bit of splat on the attack and slight drive on the sustain. Supposedly, higher gain settings change the bandwidth of the mid-frequency EQ, but by 11-o-clock on the gain the AGS is too harsh for my taste, so I can't comment on it. Construction is also top-notch. It's rolled steel, has flanges over the cable connection end for protection, and has heavy duty foot switches and knobs. I have no concern that I'm going to accidentally break it, which fits with the Tone HAMMER name.

    Killer Preamp and DI!

Comments about Aguilar Tone Hammer Bass Preamp/Direct Box:

I've been looking for something to bump my BDDI off my board and I finally found it! The Tone Hammer delivers moster tone and is far more versitile than the BDDI. The Tone Hammer allows you to maintain the tone of your bass and gives you complete EQ control (especially in the mids). My only complaint is that the AGS circuit doesn't have its own level so you get a minimum 12db volume boost when you engage it. Stepping on it in the middle of a song just isn't an option for me. I could see using it for recording but in a live setting, its unusable. But I don't need the AGS circuit as this thing shines as a preamp all by itself. Its 18v so you need two 9v batteries or an 18v adapter. The 18v gives you a ton of headroom. Bottom line - this thing rocks....built like a tank and delivers a huge, fat, organic, versitle tone. Buh bye've been good to me but the Tone Hammer just slayed you.....

Comments about Aguilar Tone Hammer Bass Preamp/Direct Box:

Read many reviews on this preamp so I had to give it a try. Glad I did. The +18db on the bass and treble can really bring a bass to life, especially in the kind of gigs I do, working with a 9-piece band. Hey Aguilar, this thing is killer! Also, a shout-out to Musician's Friend, I purchased this with my 20% discount postcard, no tax, free shipping, and received it 4 days later, UPS Ground. That's awesome if you ask me! Bravo Musicians Friend!!
