OVERVIEW

Get a wealth of tones, FX and versatility from this powerful, portable, do-all 1x12 combo.

Katana—the traditional sword carried by the historic samurai of Japan—is a symbol of honor, precision, and artistry in Japanese culture. Adopting the majestic sword’s name with pride, the Katana series presents guitar amplifiers with smooth, cutting tones honed by generations of dedication and expertise. Born of the development process behind the acclaimed Waza amplifier, these innovative amps embody BOSS’s determined pursuit of the ultimate rock sound. Featuring proprietary circuit designs and meticulous tuning, the Katana series combines traditional craftsmanship and breakthrough functions to produce true next-generation rock amplifiers.

With 50 watts of power and a custom 12-in. speaker, the Katana KTN-50 delivers a commanding range of gig-worthy tones that gracefully slice through any band scenario. The amp also excels for home playing, with a uniquely efficient design and innovative Power Control that provides inspiring sound and response at low volumes. In addition, the Katana KTN-50 includes integrated access to 55 BOSS effects, which are customizable using the free BOSS Tone Studio editor software. Up to 15 different effects can be configured in the amp at one time, enabling you to bring fully prepared tones to the stage in one amp.

A Refined Amp with Inspiring Tone
Designed for guitarists who are serious about their sound, the Katana KTN-50 offers exceptional tone and touch response for stage playing, recording, and simply practicing at home. The custom 12-inch speaker is driven by a special method developed for the flagship Waza amp that optimizes the speaker and cabinet character. This gives you authoritative punch and cutting presence previously attainable only with high-end amp designs. In combination with the five selectable amp characters, the Katana KTN-50 produces class-defying power and expressiveness to meet any playing situation.

Five Original Amp Characters, Honed for Rock Playing
Sharpened to perfection by the BOSS engineering team, the Katana KTN-50’s five amp characters offer everything from organic vintage tones to modern high-gain sounds. Clean is natural and transparent, while Crunch offers satisfying grit and response. Lead has a wide gain range to suit many styles, from fat, stinging blues solos to fluid legato shredding. With DNA inherited from the Waza amp, Brown delivers refined high-gain tone sought after by the world’s greatest rock players. The Acoustic character further enhances the Katana’s versatility, providing optimized tone that makes acoustic-electric guitars sound stunningly natural.

Leave Your Pedalboard at Home
With its built-in BOSS effects and recallable Tone Settings, the Katana KTN-50 lets you perform anywhere with just a guitar and amp. Connecting to BOSS Tone Studio via USB provides access to 55 effects that are fully customizable for your needs. Going beyond standard distortion, delay, and reverb, the selection also includes powerful tone-shapers like pitch shifting, ring mod, slicer, and more. You can load 15 different effects in the amp at one time and use up to three simultaneously. Two tone Settings let you store custom amp and effects setups for instant recall, and you can always jump to the current panel settings at the touch of a button. It’s also possible to connect optional footswitches and expression pedals for hands-free control on the gig.

Grab-and-Go Operation
While the Katana KTN-50 includes many advanced features, it’s amazingly simple to operate. Dedicated knobs for multiple gain stages and three-band EQ allow you to quickly dial in your tone by ear, just as you would with a standard tube amp. Essential effects parameters are adjusted with a simple knob twist, and memories can be stored with a brief button hold. The Power Control is great for throttling back the volume for small stages and home playing, and also includes a Standby setting that mutes the sound for switching guitars or taking breaks. And by flipping out the integrated tilt stand, you can easily angle the amp back for better sound projection.

BOSS Tone Central
At the BOSS Tone Central website, you’ll find numerous free amp and effects setups for the Katana series. Created by pro guitarists, these setups provide ready-to-play sounds for various music styles, and also make great starting points for building your own sounds. They load into the memories in a Katana amp via the BOSS Tone Studio editor software, which is also available at the site. In addition to Katana effects selection and customization, BOSS Tone Studio gives you a convenient way to organize all your Katana setups for different gigs, recordings, and practice sessions.

Mine came from another dealer. MF didn't have them in at the time. I have had it for over 2 months now. To comment on the one lower rating first. The fx are adjustable if you plug it in via USB. Mine seemingly was weak in the delay as well. Easily fixed. But some fx are better than others. None bad though. Good reverb and that Boss distortion that I grew up on. Wanna compare the amps tone to something familiar. Think DSLish. But it really is it's own thing. I really don't want to tag it with another amps tone. So say vaguely similar. With Boss distortion pedals built in. Etc.. I foresee no issues. Well built. It's a solid offering. I asked Boss about the speaker. They quickly responded. 4ohm and a brief as well as polite disclaimer regarding mods accompanied the response. It's great as is. Do a speaker swap and wow.... Really. Huge difference. The amp went from good to great. I went from pleased to extremely satisfied. Is it an expensive tube amp replacement. Of course not. It's neither expensive nor tube. Is it satisfying, dependable and versatile enough for nearly any player. YES... And if you're down for it try a speaker swap. Really huge difference in every aspect of the amps performance. But as it sits it's a solid amp. And should serve you well.

This Amp Is The Boss!

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I read about this amp online and listened to many reviews on youtube. I decided to go ahead and buy one from Musicians Friend.
I can't say enough about how much I love this amp! It has a very nice sound on the clean setting which can be rocked a bit by turning the gain up. The crunch, lead, brown, and an actual setting for an acoustic guitar all sound good as well. A cool feature is the power level switch. (You can set it at 1/2, 25, or 50 watt setting.) It reminds me very much of a tube amp as you can set it at 1/2 watt ,adjust your tone settings, and make the amp sound as if you are playing at a full 50 watts without blowing out the windows at home.
Another cool feature is the built in effects. The amp comes with 15 already stored in the unit with the ability to change them when connected to the Boss Tone Studio. I had to do an upgrade on the software before it would let me change effects. It took me a couple of times to get it to upgrade, as the instructions were kind of vague on how to do this on the Boss website. This is one thing they should improve. (Do not let that scare you off from getting this amp. It's a keeper!) Everything once connected to the tone studio is very easy to use and like the 100 watt versions you get a presence level on the screen to adjust. (The 100 watt versions have a physical control on the amp panel.)
If you are looking for an amp that is not complicated to use, has great sounding effects, built very well, and very portable.......This amp would make a Great selection!! I think Boss has a Winner and if you look around at reviews from all over the web.......You can't find one that does not praise this amp for all it offers at an exceptional price. The fact that Boss made this all work without being complicated to use is a bonus!

This Amp Rocks!

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I bought this from MF after reading many reviews online and listening to samples on YouTube. This amp is very simple to use and has a ton of great sounding effects built in. I also like the power switch which lets you chose between 1/2, 25, or 50 watts. I have never seen this on a solid state amp before.
It responds like a tube amp when set to 1/2 watt and you crank up the volume a bit. It's amazing!
I have connected to the Boss Tone Studio and downloaded some other effects into the amp..Very simple. You also have a presence control when connected to the tone studio. The 100 watt models have this on the amp control panel...the 50 watt does not. (so you get a virtual presence control on the 50.) The quality of the effects, simple operation, awesome sound & tone make these amps a winner!
It makes it hard to put the guitar down when you can have so much fun with an amp. I highly recommend the Boss Katana amp line!

First amp I've ever liked with all the knobs set on 12 o'clock (no EFX on). Voices are stunning! Great nuances when adjusting EQ. The EFX are very well selected, and I find no lack of versatility. Great product.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I play in a classic rock cover band that gigs pretty regularly in small to medium sized venues. I have many guitars and amps, and I enjoy gigging with all of them in a steady rotation. I've been dealing with chronic back pain and sciatica, so it became very difficult to carry my tube combos to gigs. I read great reviews on the Katana and debated whether to get the 50w or 100w, finally deciding on the 50 with the intention of using it as a clean pedal platform. I gigged with it for the first time last week on the clean setting - both channel and master volume maxed at 25w unmic'd. As other reviewers mention, the clean setting doesn't have as much volume as the gain settings, but it has a nice warm punch that cuts through beautifully. I used a Timmy pedal for crunch/OD and a Rockett Archer as a clean boost at the end of the chain. I set CH2 as a heavier gain channel, which also worked great. People wonder if 50w is loud enough for unmic'd gigs, but we're conscientious of our stage volume and want the audience to actually hear the vocals. The effects are cool, but I'll never really use them, just running the amp clean with effect pedals in the front end works for me!

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

Nothing but frustration since I purchased this amp. Tone Central sucks because it decides when it wants to work and not work. Now I'm forced to update my software which I attempted 5 times now. Forget using your own pedals with this one as well. Bums me I can't use my favorite volume pedal. It bleeds through and is useless. Useless you really dig guessing games which light means what and what area you turn your knob to decides which of 2 effects. I wish I could get a refund and buy a amp that works every time I'm ready to play.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

What an amazing amp, sound. The cleans are stunning. The thing that comes to mind is that i'm playing a 700$ or more of an amp. I play mostly blues, indie, soft pop and some rock and it delivers in every aspect. It is Gigable if played in a Bar, and if you are in a stage, it is also gigable, just have to be miced to a PA.

You will not regret this buy. If you can give a bit more, go for the 100W, not because it has more power, but it has more output channels and a Line Output. The rest it is the absolute same thing as this one.

One thing more, the Delay preset has to be configurable thru the USB connection a Boos Studio App.

I got this for a rehearsal amp cuz I didnt wanna lug my heavy beast to rehearsals. Bands I play in are super loud and I was curious if a 50 watt could be heard. Yes Yes and Yes. Dont even have it half way up and it is perfect. BOSS Tone Central is SIMPLE to use. You can pretty much create any sound you need. Not a huge fan of the stock sounds in the amp but I never really like any sounds that come with a model amp. Tweaking is the key. BOSS nailed it. That Metal Zone on the BOSS Tone Central is my fave. The acoustic feature is kool too. Havnt gigged with it yet but I think it wouldnt be an issue. Has line out and anything can be miced anyways. Buy it here @ Musicians Friend you cant go wrong.

This amp has all the tone I'll ever need,it's what I've been looking for for years. Perfect tone at a bedroom volume. I turned it on and jammed for 2 solid hours, couldn't get enough. Haven't gotten into the Boss app yet, can't wait. Awesome, someone finally perfected the digital guitar amplifier. My strat sounds like at strat, tele, like a tele. Will play the Les Paul today, you will not be disappointed AAAAAAAA++++++++.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

This is the best sounding, most versatile amp I've ever had...and that includes some really expensive ones. Once you spend a little time working with the online interface, you can make the amp sound however you want...the sound possibities are endless and pedals are not necessary. But you can also just plug in as it is and sound great with or without pedals. This is a ridiculously low price for such a quality amp...and it's loud. The 50 watts is tube 50 watts, not solid state. Makes you want to not stop playing

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

First off, I'm not going to compare this amp to high end tube amps, because that isn't what it is. It would certainly hold its own against them though.
About me: I've been playing guitar for just under 25 years. I primarily play post-rock and ambient stuff, but also enjoy rock and blues.
I purchased this amp because I needed a smaller practice amp for at home. I am able to play as loud as I want, but my small room can't handle the pressure of my bigger amps (or I should say, my ears can't handle the pressure of the bigger amps). A friend of mine (who has been playing longer than I have) purchased this amp and had been raving about it for several weeks before I decided to give it a try.
Right out of the box you can get a great tone. The cleans are crystal clean once you dial it in right. The distorted tones sound authentic. The amp doesn't just sound good, but also feels good to play. It has a presence that you can only get from really cranking a tube amp.
My favorite feature is that you can reduce the wattage. The .5 watt setting is plenty loud enough for at home. I've heard some people gig with it on this setting, which would work if you played softer music I suppose. The 25 watt is loud and the 50 watt is very loud.
If you are unsure of whether you will like this amp, trust me, you will.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

Don't let the size of this amp fool you, this 50 watts amp is powerful, perfect to use in small gigs, bars, Jazz and Blues Bands. But, it have amazing crunch and metal sounds too. Everything in this amp works perfect, the software for the Boss Tone Studio, got to be download from the Boss web site but it is easy ( comes in compressed zip file and in less than 3 minutes you will get the driver, the application and the update. The good part about the software is that it works for win 8.1 and 10 or Mac. The Boss Tone Studio will give you even more different sounds than the one in the amp, probably above 50 new sounds but the possibilities of combinations are endless.

This is a hard cork solid amp, build with quality and exceptional craftsmanship. The one I got is made in Japan and it is a real Samurai. If you are looking for a great 50 w amp that sound like a 70 w amp and have features found in more expensive solid state amp that sound like real tube amps then, this is it.

I was so impressed with the sound, plus the power of this amp and what it can do and deliver that I decide to buy me the 100 watt KATANA KTN-100 and blow out the house.

                        Cordially.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

This is a great little amp. At the price of a good practice amp, it has enough power to use for some gigs. The 0.5W setting has decent enough tone for lower-volume practice, but it comes alive at the higher wattage settings. The effects sound pretty good, though there are some limitations in what you can combine due to the sharing of the first and second knobs between booster/mod and delay/fx, respectively. However, you'll still have a wide palette of sounds.

The 100W is a little bigger and weighs a little more, but the 4-channels vs. 2-channels might be a worthwhile upgrade. However, the price/performance ratio of the 50W is really good.
