OVERVIEW

An amazing do-all head with enough power for any venue.

Katana—the traditional sword carried by the historic samurai of Japan—is a symbol of honor, precision, and artistry in Japanese culture. Adopting the majestic sword’s name with pride, the Katana series presents guitar amplifiers with smooth, cutting tones honed by generations of dedication and expertise. Born of the development process behind the acclaimed Waza amplifier, these innovative amps embody BOSS’s determined pursuit of the ultimate rock sound. Featuring proprietary circuit designs and meticulous tuning, the Katana Series combines traditional craftsmanship and breakthrough functions to produce true next-generation rock amplifiers.

Compact and powerful, the 100-watt Katana KTN-Head delivers sharply defined rock tones with rich, commanding presence. The amp also includes integrated access to 55 BOSS effects, which are customizable using the free BOSS Tone Studio editor software. Up to 15 different effects can be loaded at one time, enabling you to build fully prepared sounds inside the amp. In addition, the versatile Katana KTN-Head is equipped with an effects loop and MIDI for integration with advanced rigs, and features a convenient built-in monitor speaker for tone preview and practice without a cab.

A Refined Amp with Inspiring Tone
Designed for guitarists who are serious about their sound, the Katana KTN-Head offers class-defying power and expressiveness to meet any playing situation. A special method developed for the flagship Waza amp optimizes the head’s interaction with your connected speaker cab, giving you authoritative punch and cutting presence previously attainable only with high-end amp designs. The compact size is easy to carry to gigs, jams, and practice sessions, and the rear panel is filled with lots of connectivity for interfacing with external gear. The amp’s built-in monitor speaker is also handy, letting you check tones and practice anywhere without having to connect to a cabinet.

Five Original Amp Characters, Honed for Rock Playing
Sharpened to perfection by the BOSS engineering team, the Katana KTN-Head’s five amp characters offer everything from organic vintage tones to modern high-gain sounds. Clean is natural and transparent, while Crunch offers satisfying grit and response. Lead has a wide gain range to suit many styles, from fat, stinging blues solos to fluid legato shredding. With DNA inherited from the Waza amp, Brown delivers refined high-gain tone sought after by the world’s greatest rock players. The Acoustic character further enhances the Katana’s versatility, providing optimized tone that makes acoustic-electric guitars sound stunningly natural.

Leave Your Pedalboard at Home
With its built-in BOSS effects and recallable Tone Settings, the Katana KTN-Head lets you create fully prepared sounds for any song or style. Connecting to BOSS Tone Studio via USB provides access to 55 effects that are customizable for your needs. Going beyond standard distortion, delay, and reverb, the selection also includes powerful tone-shapers like pitch shifting, ring mod, slicer, and more. You can load 15 different effects in the amp at one time and use up to three simultaneously. Four Tone Settings let you store custom amp and effects setups for instant recall, and you can always jump to the current panel settings at the touch of a button. External control is also possible with optional footswitches, expression pedals, and MIDI devices.

Grab-and-Go Operation
While the Katana KTN-Head includes many advanced features, it’s amazingly simple to operate. Dedicated knobs for multiple gain stages, three-band EQ, and presence allow you to quickly dial in your tone by ear, just as you would with a standard tube amp. Essential effects parameters are adjusted with a simple knob twist, and Tone Setting memories can be stored with a brief button hold. In addition to throttling back the volume for small stages and home playing, the Power Control has a Standby setting that mutes the sound for switching guitars or taking breaks.

Connect and Control
The Katana KTN-Head’s speaker out supports connection to your favorite 8-ohm or 16-ohm cab. You can also send a simultaneous direct feed to PA or recording equipment using the Line Out, which provides authentic mic’d up tone with power, fullness, and dynamics. It’s also possible to send the same mix-ready sound to your computer music recording software via USB. Advanced players will appreciate the effects loop and MIDI input, which enables easy integration with external effects and MIDI switching devices like the BOSS ES-8 and ES-5.

BOSS Tone Central
At the BOSS Tone Central website, you’ll find numerous free amp and effects setups for the Katana Series. Created by pro guitarists, these setups provide ready-to-play sounds for various music styles, and also make great starting points for building your own sounds. They load into the memories in a Katana amp via the BOSS Tone Studio editor software, which is also available at the site. In addition to Katana effects selection and customization, BOSS Tone Studio gives you a convenient way to organize all your Katana setups for different gigs, recordingsand practice sessions.

EXCELLENT Amp ....features promised however are in limbo

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-Head 100W Guitar Amplifier Head:

I'll preface by saying if Boss fixes the main reason myself & many others purchased these amps (Tone Studio) or if they will respond to tickets submitted on their website...or even as far as their Facebook ads for this product I will write a much more positive review.
As for the amp, well, WOW. I can't tell you how hard it is to distinguish from a tube amp when it's cranked..you'd almost have to see for yourself. Clean tones are outrageous. Really nailed it. I've got a heavy tone I'm starting to be happy with but since I don't have the benefit of Tone Studio I kind of feel like I'm wasting time dialing in something that most likely can be tweaked or improved at that point. I ordered the GA-FC to control it and it's backordered an extra month over the estimate when I placed my order now so I'm sure that'll show up the day Tone Studio begins working lol.
Boss REALLY has something here. I was -thhhhhis- close to buying a Spider V Head and with one last youtube video featuring Tone Studio I changed my whole course. I am really hoping they up their customer service & communication with customer game and AT LEAST give people who have already plunked down their money an idea when they can use these fantastic amps as they were intended (and advertised).
They fix that & I'm coming back with a 5-Star review because this is really a great sounding and responding amplifier. I would just wait to buy it (unless you are an Apple user) until you see Tone Studio available to download on their website again.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-Head 100W Guitar Amplifier Head:

Really love this amp. I wanted it because it is small, lightweight, compact and portable yet powerful. It did not disappoint. It has great amp sounds and built in effects from a very popular effects pedal maker-Boss! I sold my Boss overdrive pedal because I no longer need it. I also like that it has different wattage settings for low volume practice. I've always favored solid state amps anyway. They're rugged reliable and dependable and maintenance free. I'm running it through a 212 cab, but you can hook it up to any 100 watt cab and you will have plenty of volume and power. Even has a built in 5 inch speaker! Great amp for any kind of music.

very impressed with this head, for heavier stuff is dirty but still has attack and cuts through! the built in speaker is great for home use and at 100 Watts when I use a 4x12 it can cut any venue live!

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-Head 100W Guitar Amplifier Head:

This head is loud enough to keep up with a Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 100 during practice and it sounds unbelievable. It's hard not to tell that it is a solid state amp. Presets and effects are pure boss.

Great tone and plenty of headroom @ 19lbs!

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-Head 100W Guitar Amplifier Head:

I play with a drummer and bassist in a small room and this amp cuts through without distorting. The effects are clean and don't have that cheap-compressed-digital quality that we all love. The software is intuitive and allows you to change the set of onboard effects for each channel separately. The only negative is that the foot controller does not come with the amp and they are currently on intergalactic backorder. I have several tube and solid-state amps that I love but the ease of use and tonal richness for a good price and only 19lbs makes this is an awesome buy!

        Cons

        • Cost more than the Katana 100 with 12" speaker
        • Only accommodates 8 ohms
        • Single speaker output

        Best Uses

        • Purchased for use with pedal steel guitar

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-Head 100W Guitar Amplifier Head:

I already had the Katana 100 so I thought I would try the Katana Head. It is disappointing that the head
only has a single speaker output and will only accommodate a minimum 8 ohm load. I normally use 15" or 12" speaker cabs in pairs. The head only has a single minimum 8 ohm out jack. I had to build a box so I could use two 4 ohm speakers in series.

Still trying to figure out why the head cost more than the Katana 100(1/12).

Unless someone has a real need for the head, I would recommend going with the Katana 100.

This things is awesome for everything except extreme metal, which I don't play anyways. The acoustic sound is pretty close. I like that there is a lot you can do with it, but not too much like some of the competitors.

It's smaller than I thought, but it still cranks out the power.

            Looks awesome too.

Save on 4 settings. That's just right for me.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-Head 100W Guitar Amplifier Head:

While the boost/overdrive does add a ton of volume, the clean channel, on its own, does not really get loud enough without bringing the gain up to the point where it starts to TRY to simulate tube break-up but does it badly. At clean levels, my 15 watt Blues Jr. completely overpowers this head going through the same speaker cabinet. So, unless you are happy running with an overdriven sound at all times, I would look elsewhere for an amp that can maintain good cleans at high volumes.
