I am a professional musician of 20 or so years, and am now a music instructor. I have performed/recorded all kinds of music, from Metal (most genres, except for Death Metal) to World music and yes, even Country/Rockabilly! The Hughes and Kettner Edt. Blu 60-R, is quite simply, one of the best, most amazing little combo amps for the size and price! I literally bought this item without even hearing it, only based on the company reputation, as well as others in it's price range that I have had experience with. I have got to say, I am FLOORED. For a 60w solid-state amp, it sounds unreal. For example, like tube amps, if you crank the clean channel, there is a bit more 'hair' present. I could not believe it. The lead channel really does offer vintage types, as well as scooped-mid blast! Instant AC/DC! Instant Killswitch! My primary guitar right now is a custom Jackson dinky with EMGs(SA/SA/81), as well as an American Deluxe Strat with a Seymour Duncan Lil' Screamin' Demon single coil in the bridge and Lace Sensors. My current recording/performing setup is the Boss GT 8 (also a great unit), and a great old Marshall JCM 800 100w Combo (which stays at my rehearsal space... way too heavy to lug back and forth from home!), and I cannot wait to get these kids together for a ripping session! Do believe the hype on this one. I have no reservations about using this for small club gigs, rehearsals, home, even recording!

Ok here is what I don't get. Is how this amp can be rated so high. I mean honestly come on as soon as you turn in on all you can hear is a loud high pitch whistle. But then again yeah, the sound when you start to play is decent and the whistling noise goes away. And there arent any effects on here its just distortion so thats something else to think about. The clean is ok the distortion is actually pretty good. I can also hook it up to my 15 watt hughes and kettner which looks really nice stacked on top with the lights out.I guess its worth it at this price.

This amp is very good.

I bought this amp with out hearing it.... Hughes & Kettner is a great brand, and I trusted that. This amp is very good if you want a kind of a tube sound. This amp gives you that tube "crunch" if you crank it on the clean channel, which is cool. Also, it was tube circuitry, so if you turn up the treble it takes way some middle tones, like a tube amp. For the price, it is unbeatable. I would suggest this amp for people who want a tube tone without the price.

Hughes and Kettner Edition Blue-60

By St. John

from Portland, OR

I recently purchased the H&K Edition Blue 60R, as I was unhappy with the amps I currently own. My hopes were that a 12" speaker would handle the frequencies better than the 8" speakers I've been used to, and that as indicated, the tone would be more 'tube-ish'...not to mention that Hughes and Kettner has quite a reputation. For the price, this amp is great! The sound is not as sharp as the other solid state amps I have played; instead, I get a nice full, round tone. I love it! And the lead channel is capable of going from a bluesy overdriven type sound, to that of modern metal. The reverb effect 'feels' a little strange to me, as I'm used to spring reverb, which is not present in this amp. I've also noticed if I play a chord, hold it, and listen to it decay, right as it trails off at the end, the speaker hiss increases as the note's volume decreases...of course how often am I actually goint to do this in real playing? And most likely no one else would hear the slight sound anyway. When playing through headphones, the noise isn't even there. I checked. This is a great amp for the money! Go ahead and buy one.

WHAT A PLEASANT SURPRISE!

By Not as good as Steve Howe

from LOUDONVILLE, NY

I have heard of H & K amps for years and frequently wanted to really test their claims of having great tone. The answer is: Buy this Amp! I have been playing guitar for 39 years and have owned many Fenders, Marshalls, Peaveys, and even a Matchless & Mesa Boogie. I am very pleased with the "fit & finish" of this unit. This is my 25th year as a sales rep for Yamaha Electronics so I know quite a bit about quality & performance. The engineers at H & K have produced a fine product.

This amp blew me away!

By Pearsol

from Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Been playing for 6 years and this is the best combo amp for tube like clean and crunch tone I've ever heard. I played 30-60 watt Epiphone, Vox, Line 6 & Crate and this won hands down. Makes my Marshall mg15rcd sound sick. Great price too. I play a 06 Mexican Strat & 04 Epi Les Paul. Both sound amazing thru this amp. The blue backlit panel is cool to boot. Best "bang for the buck" in town.

what a bargain!!

By frankieB

I was looking for a small compact amp for small jazz & blues gigs expecting to pay big $$$ for class A 20 or 30 watts. This amp suited me down to the ground for these small gigs. The best non valve valve sound i think i have ever heard in an amp. Only had it for a few days but still love the sound.Best amp for the $$$$ I could not believe it.Sounds great for a Stevie Ray sound and a mighty fine 335 sound too!!!

Better than similar priced tube amps

I went to try out the Fender Pro Jr, and was DISGUSTED with the sound. There on the floor was a used Hughes and Kettner Blue 60R, so I figured I'd give it a play. It was BEAUTIFUL. The clean was crisp and beautiful. The lead channel had a nice crunchy sound, and it created a beautiful workable distortion. I picked this amp up for less than half of what I wanted to spend on a class A tube amp. It is a must own for the musician who wants quality on a budget.

I tried to like it!

By Stratcatz

from Brunswick, NC

Sorry, but I tried my best to fall in love with this amp, but just could not. The distortion is one dimensional, fuzzy, and over the top. The clean channel is very sterile. Changing the volume on my guitar did little to change the distortion, like it had no headroom. Not an amp for blues or classic rock.

Compact and gigworthy

By Anonymous

Hey all , I purchased mine a few months ago and had to send it back due to an internal failure .They shipped me another one right away and I've played a couple of gigs with it and so far , I'm very happy with the tones I'm wringing out of it and it is a loud amp for it's size . I was sick and tired of lugging 4x12 cabs everywhere and at 2:30 in the morning , when your loading-up after a gig , the H&K Edition Blue 60 is a treat to unplug and put it in the backseat of your car . As far as I'm concerned , the amp has already paid for itself and it ROCKS ! I ordered it only on H&K's rep for tone monster amps and I am now a firm believer !

Get One If You Can Still Find One.

I found the Hughes and Kettner Blue Edition R-60. 2 Channel, Celestion, Spring Reverb, and Clean Effects Loop. Best sounding sparkling clean channel good for jazz that gets way loud. It then breaks up like a tube amp with the gain higher up into blues/rock. The lead channel breaks up and drives early in the gain and is capable many crunchy to saturated hard tones. I have become a Sanamp preamp junkie with their awesome breakup tones. This would be Tech 21's rival, but it looks like you can only get tube Hughes and Kettner's in the states these days. I was going to get the Tubemeister until I saw this used for practically nothing and gave it a shot. I would be happy with the sound I am getting from this paying what I did. The Blue 60 that followed this model has digital reverb (not spring weak!). I already have a sweet customized tube amp, but finding a good amp with an effects loop (plus spring reverb) was looking to be a challenge. I wasn't looking forward to another amp that really only sounds good if you have it at least at mid volume (tube amps) but did not want a solid state that I wasn't good enough to record. You will only see this review if you Googled the Blue R-60. Get it if you can. You will have something the brag about and some left over to buy that pedal that you have been barely holding off on.

Great Amp

This is a very good amp and has a very good distortion on it. The reverb on this amp is also very good. I bought this brand because I heard it was very good, and I play a lot of Rush songs, and Alex Lifson uses the same brand. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Sweet little Amp

By Memphis-Bo.nL

from Langhorne Pa

I bought this amp as a pratice Amp and it rocks! Not only does it sound great but it looks great too. Plug in a portable cd player and jam with your favorite band. It has become my favorite little Amp and at 60 watts you can even use it to jam with friends. If you are looking for a cool little amp this is it and you can't beat the price.

Awesome DEAL

They just had a price drop on this amp and I jumped on the deal. Super sweet clarity on the clean channel, and it has a great over driven tube sound on the lead channel. The Celestion speaker is mindblowing. Get them while the last......

Best Amp for the price; it rocks!

Ask me a question

I just bought this amp on 9-06 and did a lot of research through the internet since earlier this year on price and features that fit my style of playing. This amp was a hands down winner from the beginning but I put it off and continued looking. I played clubs and private parties for many years and have used many amps but this one really shines. Since I don't play in venues anymore,(getting too old...ha,ha,ha)this size and sound is more than I need now, I have a 65 Watt Crate amp as well but this one blew it away. The tremendous capability of sound is just amazing, I use it with my standard Ibanez RoadstarII that I've played many styles (rock, Santana, funk, blues) and it just really complemented the sound I need. The best thing is that you can mic'it up and increase the spectrum of sound....who needs an expensive amp with this capability! If you really know your instrument and sound you want this guy can deliver. I typically run a digi-tech 'Grunge' distortion box along with my lead channels to augment the spectrum of my leads, if you haven't tried that; give it a go, this amp will really respond and give you chills even at low volumes. The only disapointment is that it does not have the footswitch a standard equipment, but as far as price and sound quality; it rocks and is great for small gigs (me now, ha,ha,ha) and starting out musicians on a budget. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed.

An Ok Amp

By VanHalen1

from Vancouver, WA

See all my reviews

I wasn't overly impressed with this amp. The clean settings are ok but I really didn't like the distortion. It was too sloppy for me and it didn't really sound like rock. This amp is more of a blues amp then a rock amp. So if you are into blues, then this would probably be a good amp, but for rock it's not the best. It performs okay with pedals, My friend has this amp and I was using his Wah on it, it sounded Ok, but not great. I would say, save up another 70 bucks and get a 50 watt Marshall, It's about the same amount of watts, and it's a way better quality amp.
