OVERVIEW

(Open Box) The awesome workhorse Marshall DSL combo is back, with modern features.

The updated Marshall DSL series has arrived! These DSL amps are laden with Marshall tone, features and functionality for the novice, as well as pros performing on the world’s biggest stages. The DSL series includes the following new features:

Adjustable Power Output
These DSL models feature adjustable power settings, which delivers all-valve tone and feel, at any volume, from bedroom to stage. The new technology adjusts power to the valves, instead of just turning off valve stages, allowing the amp to remain articulate and dynamic.

EQ Refinements
Some innovative tweaks to the EQ circuitry have given the new DSLs even greater tonal flexibility. The EQ section of the new DSLs can deliver exactly what your ears are looking for.

Emulated output
Marshall's partnership with Softube has led to the creation of award-winning plug-ins, as well as exceptional tone in its CODE digital amps. The same team is responsible for the development of the new emulated output feature, found in the DSL series. Both the headphone out, and line out on the DSL models boast incredibly accurate emulation of Marshall's famed 1960 cabinet.

Reverb, Resonance and Master Volume
The DSL is now more versatile than ever, with new features including discrete master volume controls for each channel, built-in reverb and resonance controls (the DSL1 and DSL5 do not offer resonance controls).

New Models
Additions to the range include the all-new DSL1 head and combos which offer all-valve Marshall DSL tone in a smaller package plus a DSL20 combo and head.

I can't rave enough about this amp! Love it! I searched for the perfect amp to pair with my Gibson guitars for about 6 months. I play a lot of rock and classic rock (mostly rhythm and some lead) so tone and "kick you in the chest" bottom end sound were critical to me. I played many competitive brands and even compared this to the higher end JVM series. This DSL 40 had the best "full" sound that I was looking for and at a reasonable price. In my band, we run through a PA system (emulated out through a direct box for me) and work hard to manage stage volume. So, this wattage was perfect to turn up the volume enough to work the tubes and heat myself, without killing the balance of the other instruments or blasting. The 20w (1/2 power) feature is nice too. I've used it in multiple rehearsals and a few gigs by now and am very happy with it!

All the nice things everyone is saying about this amp are true. I "upgraded" from the DSL40C to this, and there is a noticeable improvement in sound and functionality - the assignable dual master volume controls are great as they allow you to compensate for the volume difference between the clean and crunch modes of channel 1, and the amp seems to sound much better at bedroom levels than the DSL40C. Also, the resonance control is great for fine-tuning your sound.

Here's the (to me) huge problem: there is a very noticeable lag when switching channels. You step on the footswitch, all sound cuts out and then the sound comes back on the new channel after a one count. If you mostly switch channels in between songs, this shouldn't be an issue. I have to switch while playing on a lot of stuff, so to me the amp is not usable. Which really stinks, because the amp sounds fantastic. I reached out to Marshall about this and they indicated that "this is the way the amp was designed."

So, I am switching back to the DSL40C.

Comments about Marshall DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I've been playing guitar for over forty years and have owned or had access to a lot of great amps including two DSL heads from the JCM 2000 series and a DSL 40c from the previous series. I haven't owned a Marshall since 2013. When I found out Marshall had updated and improved the DSL series of amplifiers, I thought I would try one and now have the DSL40CR.
This is a great sounding amp! Marshall has made some changes in the tone circuit which imho has improved the tone. There's less gain on the ultra gain channel and more on the classic gain channel. The clean mode starts to break up at lower gain settings, but a good clean sound is available. The crunch mode has more gain. OD1 and OD2 sound great and OD2 is more usable. It is my favorite mode.
Marshall is using the Celestion V Type speaker in the DSL40CR which sounds great in this amp and is a major improvement over the seventy 80.
The older DSLs had the bright cap which would engage when the channels were switched from classic gain to ultra gain making the ultra gain channel brighter and finding a compatible eq setting for both channels more difficult. I don't know for a fact that Marshall has eliminated the bright cap from their design, but I don't hear thevamp getting brighter when the channels are switched.
The build quality has been improved and more importantly the quality of the tone has been improved over the previous series. I recently tried out a mini jubilee and I think the DSL40CR sounds better.
The series effects loop is a definite improvement. The reverb has been improved but is still weak. The emulated out is a nice feature but doesn't sound that great. The half power works great. I haven't tried the multi switching function but I have a friend who bought a DSL100HR. He is using a midi controller to use all four amp modes with an elaborate pedal board with several loops and it works to his satisfaction.
I'm happy with the DSL40CR and appreciate Marshall for making a great amp at such a great price!

Comments about Marshall DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Bought mine from Guitar Center. Same thing, right? I like mine pristine, so I drove a ways and found one in the box at the Guitar Center in Peoria, IL. Cameron was great over the phone. Unboxed it in my driveway and learned the first thing...its heavy! Once inside, plugged in, fired up, and was overjoyed. Now I know what the fuss is about. This thing is one of the best amp values anywhere. Its clean sound is surprisingly good. It will play modern country like its supposed to sound. Just a hint of growl. The gain channels are 'insta-AC/DC' and heavier. Perfect! The reverb is there to add depth and smooth out the sound, not sound like surf music, so if its weak that's okay. Its good. Reasonably well-built. There are minor issues with screws that went in at slight angles, like someone was drilling freehand. Otherwise, its put together very well. They need to do a better job with the power screwdriver mounting the amp chassis to the cabinet. The screws got pretty chewed up. I had to try the SRV mod on this amp. I tried a few combinations and settled on a 5751 tube in v1 and it has taken some 'plastic' out of the tone. Very helpful. One thing I absolutely LOVE is the V-series speaker. I have some CDR's and knowing the all use the same basic speaker (except the ohms) is oddly reassuring. It sounds great. I liked the amp so much I took it to an outdoor gig the next night and it represented itself wonderfully. Played a tele through pedals and into the clean channel all night and the thing was 'plug and play' all night. I never touched the tone knobs once. Had to find a comfortable volume and that was it. I have HATED Marshall amps for decades until this one came along. Now, I'm considering an Origin. Looking forward to experimenting with some multi-amp setups soon (Fender+Marshall, only with smaller amps, but like EJ!) Marshall really has come up with a winner here. I'll recommend the DSL40CR to anyone. Its fantastic.

Comments about Marshall DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I purchased my first Marshall, a Solid State MG30CFX, a few years ago. It's good little amp with some good tones that's easy to haul around for light jamming with my git friends. When I started looking for the "Marshall Sound", I purchased a Marshall DSL15H Amp head with a MX212A Cab. The sound/tone was obviously much better, and with the 2 x 12's, it was Rock'n! But neither had an FX loop. The DSL40CR has a much better sound/tone than the DSL15 Head, (it has the AC/DC like sound that I was looking for), and it has an FX loop. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just purchased the DSL40CR. I have only played it on 20 watt, but it rattles every window in the house! I can only imagine what the 40 watt setting will do! Having a blast!

Comments about Marshall DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I'll try to be brief. I've been playing a long long time & gig regularly, owned lots of amps. I had the previous version 40c and helped put out the cap mod for that amp. I gave up fighting that amp and sold it, and ultimately went back to my Fender DRRI and pedals. This is a different amp altogether. Gone is the harshness of the previous DSLs. I wanted this amp as plug n play, no od pedals (although it takes pedals through the front end beautifully). This amp is the new Marshall standard, it's that good. From clean vintage Marshall tones to more drive than is sane it has a clarity and beautiful tones and dynamics. Reverb is good but not real splashy so don't expect Fender spring verb, I just like a touch for some air so this digital verb works well for me. Operating noise is very low until you really crank the gain and it can get hissy but that is just a product of piling on the gain. It is well made and has very handy external bias points under the chassis. Amp has a lot of punch and low power mode is good. I like the full power mode and should be enough for most any gig. I love original Allman Bros lineup and was playing along with some live recordings (Stoneybrook) and just nailing Dickie & Duane's tones. Do yourself a favor and get one, it's the real deal history of Marshall tones in one box.

Comments about Marshall DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Better than the 40C it replaces in every way. No more fizz on the gain channel. The dual mode settings for each channel is more than a gimmick, it really changes the flavor of each channel, allowing it to be tailored to your sound. The bottom end is much better than the C model, yet it isn't boomy, it just has bottom end presence that cuts through, and grabs your attention. Obviously it has great distortion, a Marshall hallmark but more importantly, this is the best Marshall I've owned for dialing in the mid crunch tones....where the amp is kinda clean sounding when you play soft, but crunches up nicely when you put some pressure on the strings. Very useful. The clean tones are also exceptional, and it gets louder and stays clean than the previous version.

Speaker is very good, the new tone stack is right on the money for adjusting tone, the new master volume is nice as well. I just bought an A/B switch so I can use it with my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, which is a perfect compliment to this amp, with the Marshall being the evil twin to the Fender.

I play alt country and blues for the most part, and while this won't replace my Fender, it will certainly compliment it, and if I could only take one amp to a gig, this would be different, but it would work great. Plenty of power for club gigs. True tone monster.

I needed to replace my very old Fender Vibrolux. I am very pleased I chose this Marshall. It has a wide variety of sounds that can be tweaked a number of ways. Whether clean, overdrive, crunch or ultra, it's all excellent. The reduced output setting is great for home use, and the higher setting is loud enough for most venues.

Comments about Marshall DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp is everything I liked about the last model, and so much more. The clean and crunch channels are pretty much the same as the last one, which is awesome.

The lead channel is less fizzy and has less treble so you can easily find a good sound for everything with the shared EQ.

I use a midi footswitch to control the functions for gigs and it works great. I am looking foreword to purchasing the 6 button footswitch for it though when it comes available. DO NOT buy the JVM 410 footswitch for this amp, it does not work.

Fact is that I've been playing a lot more lately since I got this thing. It's hard to put the Les Paul down when the time is so darn good. I own or have owned a lot of amps, including the JCM2000 DSL50, the Vintage Modern, JVM205H, Bugera 333xl, Peavey 5150, etc. I really feel this amp sounds as good or better to my ears than all of those, plus it has great functional versatility for playing live. I would recommend it to anyone regardless of talent. Slash should have one in his bedroom and so should you!!

Comments about Marshall DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I liked the new features over the dsl40c as far as power and sound. The Celestion speaker is matched well with the amp. Overall a great amp for the price.

Comments about Marshall DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

What a versatile amp. The added Power Level Selector & 2 Master Volumes make this amp versatile enough for any use. Home or studio recording, gigging and bedroom. Now you can even play quiet enough for the wife & kids to sleep and keep a great tone. This one now comes with a Celestion G12 V-Type 70 Watt 16-Ohm Speaker. A HUGE upgrade from the 70/80 that the DSL40C came with. The V-Type sound is very versatile. Try it before you assume you need a new speaker like the DSL40C. The FX Loop in this amp is great as well. This truly is the best tube amp in this price range if you need one that is VERSATILE in every way. It can be used ANYWHERE and it can play ANYTHING as it comesf rom the factory. The cleans are beautiful and it can get hella dirty with no pedals.
