Comments about Vox V110NT Lil' Night Train 1x10 Guitar Speaker Cabinet:

I got this cabinet with my Li'l Night Train as a set. It is a compact, portable and light weight cab, with a Celestion VX10 Custom Vox speaker. The cab is made of MDF. The speaker when new is very bright and sharp sounding, but warms up pretty well with time. It's still a bright speaker, but much better once it's broken in.

Unfortunately the cab is too small and is boxy sounding. The small cab is the hard part to overcome. Because of its size and material its made of, it's very boxy sounding. I tried other, more powerful speakers, but the boxiness got worse. I tried an open back and the tone got too loose and quacky. After lining the cab with felt and lightly filling it with spun polyester filling (like used in pillows and stuffed animals) the tone warmed up and tightened up enough to be fairly good. It now has a vintage early 60's type tone, still a bit bright but usable.

I did have one problem with it, the speaker jack died a slow death. It started getting some bad break-up and make some odd tones. I replaced the jack and it sounded better then ever.

If you don't mind doing the mods to this cab, it's a decent home use cab, otherwise get another cab that has better tone to start with.

Comments about Vox V110NT Lil' Night Train 1x10 Guitar Speaker Cabinet:

OK, so there are some negative reviews about this little guy, saying it sounds small and boxy. does. I play blues/country/rockabilly and am always looking for that SOUND. Listen to Chuck Berry's "Maybelline," his first record (and a rare 2-chorus solo!). The guitar is raging and ragged--distorted, but not in any kind of modern (metal) way. The battle is to get the amp pushed really hard while maintaining a polite volume. Sometimes a deck party moves inside, sometimes it's a really small garage...I have the Vox Night Train head and 12-inch cab. This rig is VERY good at getting the tone I need, having a master volume that works like a master volume instead of a distortion control. I also have a pentode/triode switch that knocks the output down to 7 watts. It is HERE that this speaker cab earns its keep. The 10-inch speaker is kind of boxy sounding, but no rattles or buzzes so far. For specific players in specific situations (and you probably know who you are if you've read this far), it's a pretty nice unit.
