Don't Forget

Perfect for Irish grooves.

Remo's deep-shell Irish Bodhran is available in both 16" and 14" diameters, with a 4-1/2" deep Acousticon shell. Each drum is fashioned with an internal tuning system and a synthetic Bahia Bass drumhead. The Bahia Bass drumhead produces a soft attack and deep bass tones and is pliable to produce pitch bending notes. Remo's Irish Bodhran includes a hex tuning key and tipper drumstick.

The Bodhran is the historic drum of Ireland and is the primary rhythmic accompaniment for the folk music of the Emerald Isle. The Bodhran is typically low pitched and is played with a double headed wooden mallet called a cipn, tipper, or beater (sold separately).

Comments about Remo Irish Bodhran Drum with Bahia Bass Head:

I've been playing Bodhran for over 15 years. During that time, I've always used real goatskin head drums, a Waltons and a Malachy. I like the sound of real goatskin, so I was very skeptical of a synthetic head Bodhran and avoided the Remo for a while for that reason. However, the problem with real goat skin is that it is affected by humidity. During live performances in breweries and bars filled with sweaty people, the humidity makes real goat skin sound like a wet rag. My band carries a hair dryer to gigs to dry out our bodhrans. In no humidity, like outdoor gigs in a hot place like Bakersfield, CA or Las Vegas, NV, the real goatskin dries out and sounds like a Congo or worse. You need to wet it before every use. After this year's St. Patrick's Day gig in Vegas where I couldn't control my goatskin Bodhran, I broke down and bought the Remo synthetic head drum. I must admit, I am impressed. The sound is punchy, focused, and deep. It's tunable, so if it's too deep, you can fix that. The synthetic head is not affected by humidity and sounds good as soon as I pick it up. The back of the head has a "fabric?" covering and feels kind of like real goatskin. You can control your sound with a hand on the back of the head, just like a goatskin Bodhran. It's loud, but still needs to be amplified for live shows. I use a K&K Sound Hot Spot pickup through a Tech 21 Bass Sans Amp and it sounds great. It's still "new" to me and has only played a couple gigs at the writing of this review, but so far it has performed well. I still like the sound of the Malachy Bodhran better, but I think the Remo sounds as good as a Waltons. If you're only playing Bodhran at home, I still think the Waltons is the way to go (it's less expensive, and it sounds great). However, if you travel and play in a lot of places, you might find the synthetic head is an advantage. The Remo has now become my "go to" Bodhran and I hope to get as many years out of it that I got out of my Waltons.
