An affordable kick drum mic that delivers tight punch
The PL33 is designed for kick drum, low toms and low frequency instruments, and is price positioned to compete with other leading models. Delivering all of the tight punch and transient snap necessary for today's demanding sound requirements; the PL33 is destined to become a staple in every professional soundperson's arsenal of mics. With its enhanced isolation via a tight supercardioid polar pattern, coupled with its application-oriented frequency response voicing, it challenges the performance of competitive models costing up to twice as much. Although the PL line is designed for professional live sound applications, the PL33 (as well as all of the PL drum mics) is equally capable of handling the sonic requirements of recording studio applications.
- Element Type: Dynamic
- Freq Response: 20 Hz - 10,000 Hz

I purchased this mic as part of a 5 piece kit. I used it as an internally mounted kick drum mic and was getting clipping/distortion. After much effort I narrowed it down to this mic. This mic can't take any vibrations/shock. If you hold the mic and tap the side of it, you will hear distortion. I went back and forth with EV/Bosch regarding this issue. They swapped out for another one and it was doing the same thing. Evidently there a design flaw with the PL33. I don't have this issue with my other mics. This mic sounds great but you must use it on a separate mic stand. They eventually replaced mine with an N/D 868... no more issue.
BTW, even though the review is for the PL33, the PL35 tom mic (that came with my kit) is experiencing similar issue when used with the floor tom. I had to get a little more creative and use a cymbal felt between the mic and clip to eliminate the clipping.
Again, these mics sound great but there seems to be a design flaw that it is not very tolerant of vibrations.

Comments about Electro-Voice PL33 Kick Drum Microphone:
I purchased an Electro-Voice PL 33 over a year ago after trying out several Kick Drum mics, and at that point I stopped looking. The mic has the sonic character I was looking for for live sound use and for recording. Now the bass drum sounds right without a lot of tweaking on the EQ. And the price is right too. Highly recommended.

Comments about Electro-Voice PL33 Kick Drum Microphone:
I bought this for our drummer at brand new. The unmolested tone you get from this thing on a kick drum has little attack, and sounds quite rounded. However, our drummer loves John Bonham, so it suited him well. I then decided to use it mic up a bass cab for our bassist. It produced a fat, percussive, tone to die for with plenty of attack. I strongly recommend using this mic for bass guitar, try it you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Electro-Voice PL33 Kick Drum Microphone:
This mic is perfect for mic'ing the bass port of a cajon, which is what I was looking for. Its also the best value for a kick drum mic.
Good for congas, bass guitar cabs, floor tom and rebollo drums.
Attack is weaker than more expensive mics, but unless your playing metal it will do the job.
Tip: Use it on the sound hole of an acoustic guitar with an SM57 on the 12th fret for wide mix-abilty on a budget.
Versatile indeed.

Comments about Electro-Voice PL33 Kick Drum Microphone:
This is the first kickdrum mic I've ever purchased for myself, simply because, when on tour everything is provided by a sound co. Not on the road for now and doing small clubs I had to find a good kick microphone. Seeing all makes and styles pass throuh my kickdrum over the years I thaught i would try something new and different. The PL33 specs are very comparable to the Bata52 and other "highend" mics that have no punch. The PL33 has the punch and bottom end. For the price and performance, buy it.
Pros

- Easy To Use
Cons
- Not Super Effecient

Comments about Electro-Voice PL33 Kick Drum Microphone:
Good basic kick mic. Not as sensitive as other kick mics (to be fair this might be intentional) . It takes a little more messing with EQ to get this one to sound as nice as some of the more expensive ones. But the final result is just as good.
