Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 20 Deluxe Head:

I bought this specifically because I wanted the Tri-amp sound, but I didn't want to pay $3000 for it. This head did not disappoint. The lead channel with the boost engaged sounds fantastic. I play metal, and this thing can keep up as long as I'm running a light overdrive out front. It can do pretty much anything else under the sun as well from sparkling cleans, to gritty rock crunch. I would definitely say it is superior to the 18W version. Take my word for it, this thing is well worth the investment!

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 20 Deluxe Head:

This amp is versatile and gives you plenty of options for your sound. I needed an amp that could go from quite recording to live stage playing. I narrowed it down to an Orange 15 and the TM 20 deluxe. I chose the Orange 15 first, and ended up with TM 20 deluxe for the quite/studio work.
Excellent cleans, OD really good, and the boost really good. You could get away without using a distortion pedal in most cases with the boost channel. With that said, I still use a distortion pedal and an Xotic boost pedal for different lead sounds/situations. Takes pedal well in the front end and through the effects loop. I do use both methods.
The red box out sounds great. Use this for studio options, micing, and going into the PA in live settings.
This is an upgrade from the TM 18. Overall better.
I dislike that the amp does not come with a footswitch, and ordered that as well. Works fine and a must for the full versatility and rehearsals/live events.
The compact size and carrying case a big bonus.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 20 Deluxe Head:

I love both the clean and distortion channels. Real tube quality sound. I've paired it with a Marshall 2-12 vertical slant and it's perfect. Plenty of power for all shows we do and the redbox out is great for live and studio. Power soak feature is also outstanding. It really gives you a nice warm tube crunch at low volume. I would say the only drawback is the lead boost isn't quite beefy enough. It adds a little, but would really prefer a boost volume control to dial up a few more db's when I go into a lead (like the TM36). Great little amp, easy to use and well worth the price. I spent 100 bones on a simple lead booster pedal that gave me an extra 20db (clean without altering the sound) that did the trick.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 20 Deluxe Head:

From opening this box you realise that this product is just stunning, and very well built. It feels solid, and very high quality. Definetly a looker. Its quite easy to use, having a standard 3 knob eq control, with a seperate master volume and gain for the clean and lead channels. After some playing i realised how versatile this amp is, and you can achieve many different sounds and play styles. Its really responsive, and it gets nice and hot as a tube amp should. You have to watch out for the lead tones as it can be easy to get a grainy sound, but its easily overcome once you figure out how the dinamics of the eq work. The clean tones are absolutely wonderful. Super clean with lots of headroom, and as you turn p the gain you get this meaty tube sound that just soars. I would say the clean channel is my favorite. The power soak is really useful, you can turn down the wattage when in the bedroom, but i would say the 1 watt setting doesnt match the feeling and sound of the full 20 watts. The leads are really thumpy and you can get some nice metal or "brown sound" tones. Havent played with the redhox yet but i shall update this review when i do! Defineltly worth a pickup!

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 20 Deluxe Head:

I loved the sound that this amplifier provided- until it went wonky after the 3rd time I turned it on. The amp went from being something I really enjoyed listening to- to suddenly getting very "spongy." It would decrease volume (clean or w/gain) any time you hit a note or chord with any sort of attempt at being loud. It also started to just sound "off." The gain structure was clipping and it started to sound like when a potentiometer is dirty. I noticed one of the power tubes wasn't fully lit up like its twin beside it - so I retubed the amp. No difference. As a bonus, the standby switch no longer functions at all- turn the power on and the amplifier is on- super good for tubes.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 20 Deluxe Head:

I did countless hours of research watching sound demos of various amps. I wanted an amp that gave me a lot of versatility and would be a good platform for pedals. This amp delivers!

A quick note about some complaints I've read/heard about:

Yes, there is a volume boost when you hit the lead/boost channel. Some people don't like that. I, personally, don't understand why. If you're wanting to jump into the boost then chances are you're doing a solo (or something similar) where you want to cut through everything. It's really not a big deal as some like to say.

Some don't like the aesthetics (i.e. blue lights). You either like it, or you think it's gaudy. Personally, I like it. I think it's tasteful and I enjoy the warm glow of the tubes set against the blue light.

Now on to the good stuff!

It has tons of clean headroom but breaks up nicely when you roll the gain/master up on the clean channel. This is actually something I don't hear people talk about enough! I was fairly impressed with the sparkling cleans this amp produces and it's one reason I think it will take pedals exceptionally well! The lead and boost channels make this amp scream with sustain for days! The built in DI box is fantastic (I run mine through a Scarlet Box into Garage Band and it sounds superb). This is an excellent choice if you want to record your playing for home studio work or just as a practice tool. Especially considering you can turn the speaker cab off and run everything directly into your computer! Silent playing for the win!

Bottom line - H&K did a fantastic job on this one. This amp can do everything from jazz to country, blues to metal, and everything in between. If you're wanting an amp that lets you be versatile then this is an excellent choice.
