OVERVIEW

Needing your amp to be small and quiet doesn't mean sacrificing tone and feel any more.

The Yamaha THR5 combo amp packs in everything you need out of an off-stage amp. Developed by a team of guitarists in search of the ultimate tone, the THR5 combo delivers the sound you want and the feeling you need. Effects that enhance and complement your playing combine with room-filling reverbs and delays to push your playing to new levels. And thanks to THR's unique design and focus, stadium-filling volume isn't a pre-requisite - everything about this amp is designed to fit the way you play, right down to the need to keep it quiet sometimes. With tone and feel like this, you'll appreciate the ability to keep playing all night.

Most of THR's effects feature VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) effects processors. Based on the technology used in Yamaha's professional audio mixers, VCM effects give unsurpassed realism and quality. VCM effects are capable of capturing subtleties that simple digital simulations cannot even approach, going beyond simple simulation and delivering the truly musical performance that makes classic analog gear invaluable even in today's digital production environment.

The THR5 was developed with Yamaha's award-winning AV division to offer true hi-fi stereo sound and a new experience in guitar amplifiers. The exclusive, specially designed speaker enclosure is optimized to handle both guitar and stereo playback sounds making it uniquely capable of giving you amazing tone for both your guitar and your track from a compact, portable amp.

The THR5 incorporates Yamaha's new Extended Stereo Technology to create an incredibly wide, spacious audio image. Stereo tracks and studio quality reverb take on a depth unimaginable from such a small enclosure. Also bundled with Cubase AI, Steinberg's professional music production application it offers full-fledged recording and editing. The THR Editor offers deep editing of amp and effect parameters using your computer. Additional in-depth controls include compressor and noise gate functions.

THR's design provides stereo playback from your smartphone or other device through its AUX jack or direct from your computer via the USB connection. The user memory function lets you save up to five amp settings of all controller and switch settings for quick recall. The tap tempo function allows you to quickly set delay time. A built-in chromatic tuner features accurate, stable tuning and an easy to read display.

Finally, the THR5's Virtual Tube Illumination includes a simulated orange tube glow from the metal speaker grille.

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

I love this amp. Why hasn't someone done it like this before ? I have had many amps before ( Fender Princeton reverb 2 , Fender deluxe ,Peavey ,Roland micro cube , among several others ) I loved the big tube amps but totally unrealistic when just wanting to practice in my bedrooms or apartments. To get the sound you have to crank them . The Roland was good but still to get the sound you wanted you still had to turn it up and the sound just wasn't the same . like the difference between a old 33 LP and a cd or mp3. the old tubes had the richness that couldn't be matched like the 33 LPs and the Roland has the sound of the cds , how to combine the two and sound good ? Yamaha has done it . This amp is awesome it truly reproduces the richness and sound of the old amps while being modern , so you can listen in your apartment or bedroom . It can get loud if you want it too , it is 5x5 watt but you don't NEED too . I have this next to me on the table and play while the others are watching tv and not be disturbed or I take it to my guitar class and can jam with the students . Loudness can be about as loud as other 5watt practice amps out there but it doesn't have to be . This is also awesome in that I can hook it up to my computer and change the different amp models and even create my own sound on the fly . The Cubase Ai software it came bundled with is more complicated than I want use , if you have a mac Garage Band would be a great alternative .Overall Im very pleased and much enjoy my THR5. Thank you so much Yamaha for creating the amp I have so been looking for , for so many years .

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

I have a Les Paul and a Twin Reverb amp that sound amazing together. However, I still end up using a chorus pedal and it's difficult to move the amp--and it's difficult to crank it up at home. I got one of these and it sounds beautiful--no pedal needed--and great tone at a reasonable volume level. Plus I can use it to record directly to my PC. I don't think I'll be using anything else at home and will investigate how to use this for performing (mic'ing or line out). It sounds that good. I love it and highly recommend it.

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

That is a really well-sounding amplifier. It is loud more than enough for a small bedroom, and also sound unexpectedly well with headphones attached. The only two concerns I have:

    (1) single Tone instead of Treble+Middle+Bass (one can pay +$100 for this option in THR10), and

    (2) its being not as sturdy as it looks on the Web (on the pictures, it seems all-metal and unbreakable, which was a reason for my purchase, but in reality it is not such; I am not even convinced that the beige material is metal -- it feels more like plastic).

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

If you aspire to be a great guitarist...and that is all you will probably ever do, is aspire in the privacy of your living room this is a fantastic amp. Very easy to use, plenty of effects, fantastic sound quality, plenty loud enough to drive your loved ones into the next room. I had a mid sized amp which was bulky, complicated, way too loud...gone! The technology is top notch. Can't beat it - period and for the money a real bargain.
PS: I have never written a review for any product I have bought inline till now. I am that impressed.

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

This is quite an amazing amp. I didn't quite understand the power of it when I saw it at the store and never thought it could produce the sound that it produces. The amount of amp/effects combos when hooked up via USB is spectacular and I can sometimes get lost playing with the tones.

As a practice amp it really makes me want to just sit back and enjoy the sound of one guitar for a very long time and the tone is unbelievably good.

The physical design is great. I love the fact that it glows red when the amp is turned on. The only thing better would be that it heats up my little office on a cold winter day. Perhaps there would be a firmware upgrade that will allow me to do that sometime before winter.

There are a couple of issues, however. The software interface is a bit clunky. It took me a few tries to figure out how to save a sound setting into a separate slot. Once I alter a sound, a dialog comes up asking me if I want to save it. From there, it should assign itself to one of the slots automatically. I have to go and do that myself. Also, it took me a few times to realize that I had to save the session itself to realize my additional setting slots.

Regarding recording, I use Reason 6.5 and use the mbox as my interface to my mac. When I try to go direct in via USB, I have to change my interface from my mbox to the yamaha. Ideally, I'd like to be able to select my yamaha interface and have the output come out through the mbox sso I can hear it in the mix and headphones.

This aside, this is an amazing amp. I bought it as a practice amp so all of the other features are kind of like icing on the cake. Thanks for putting out a fantastic product.

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

I wanted to find something small with clean tones for practice. Typically the reviews are "how dirty can I get the sound...or does the overdrive sound awesome!?" I was hoping for clean tone without breaking up. I hoped the on board effects would be usable so I don't have to run a bunch of external processing. I sat it on the shelf in front of me set it to clean and dialed in a tight delay and some reverb. Nice sweet tone!

So let's be clear...this is what the amp is intended for...practice in a small room...by yourself...it's not going to be heard above a drummer or a bass player with a full on amp. It works great for the intended purpose. I can't vouch for the overdrive sounds...there are plenty of reviews or videos showing that. I smile every time I sit down to practice. One switch...one cable...and it sits on a shelf!

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

I bought this for on the go and quiet home use. My previous small practice amp was just OK. The amp sounds in this little box are great! very responsive to the guitar's volume control and picking dynamics. The clean tone, while quite good, is hard to get much volume with compared to the dirty sounds. I find myself leaving it in the "lead" amp model and just working the guitar volume knob. I have several large tube amps from some of the biggest names out there, but if I want to practice while I watch TV, or quietly work on song ideas, this little amp is just the ticket!
It makes a great little boom box as well for plugging my phone/tablet in for listening to MP3s.
